The good thing about surfing compared to other board sports, is that if you fall, it doesn't really hurt. Of course you could hit some rocks, the reef, your board, your board's fins, but as a beginner, 99% of the time when you fall, it will just be into the water. You aren't going to get eaten by sharks, but if you do, sorry. But seriously, shark attacks aren't common.

Go to a surf shop and rent a board a few times. Go out with an instructor, friends, whoever, just go a lot and you will start to pick it up. When you get the hang of it, buy yourself your own board instead of renting and go as often as you can. Don't be afraid of the ocean or sharks, just go out and have fun and you will be addicted.

Get familiar with the waves too, how they break, the ocean currents, the tides. This information will only help. Go to http://surfline.com Good Luck!

You will fall, even the pros fall, but it doesn't hurt if you fall in the water. Try to make sure you don't hit your board, someone else's board, or the bottom and you'll be fine. You might also want to start out on a soft top board just to be safe. Depending on where you surf sharks are pretty rare. Don't even think about that, you're more likely to get bit by a dog on the way to the beach then get bit by a shark.

The bigger danger is of course drowning. Make sure you know your limits and don't go out when its too big for you. Learn about the ocean, side currents and rip tides. The waves will tumble you around and hold you under but you will be fine as long as you stay calm and use your head.

Surfing is fun, and if you're just starting-out, try and avoid reef breaks that are renown for powerful and heavy sets. Stick to beach breaks with light waves and try learning on a soft top or a mini mal, so you can find your balance and get familiar with the whole thing. In a year or two, if you stick with it, you'll be alot better and be having alot more fun.

most likely you will fall MANY times, before you will be able to try to stand up. depending on your balance, it is very fustrating, but you jus have to keep trying. a shark will not come after you..i guarentee that (: but take a surfing lesson first, than you know the basics, and you will get up a lot faster. best of luck (:
