This is a philosophical question in its own right. There are 2 major views on how the Earth formed.
As a null hypothesis, since the book of Genesis of the Holy Bible was written before the Big Bang Theory and the code of evolutionary theory, let me explain it first.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. This 'God' is an all powerful, all knowing, ever present transcendent creator so powerful, that he can create things by the word of his mouth -- this is why he is called the Almighty, the Supernatural Divine Master. God spoke the Earth into existence and the hundreds of billions of stars contained within the hundreds of billions of galaxies in our universe. By God's word, Ex Nihilo the light of all creation, including the Earth, exists.
The alternative hypothesis, popular among atheists, is the Big Bang theory, which tries to explain the creation of Earth and the universe it is in without the need for a creator. It was believed that 18 billion years ago, a dot the size of a proton reached extreme cool temperatures, 10^32 Celcius, so cold that the proton reacted in a massive explosion that shot out matter and energy at 10,000,000,000 degrees farenheit and after a couple of minutes, quintillions of hydrogen atoms started to self organize to form what is known as galaxies and the contents within them. From that moment on, all the natural laws of the universe, specifically concervation of angular momentum, the law of gravity, the law of relativity, the cosmological constant, the first and second laws of thermodynamics, were created, self-sustaining, and self-"ORGANIZING". Then, about 4.5 billion years ago, our star (known as the sun) used up all the energy it can in its region to form itself, and the remnant stardust formed the planets which circle it, including the Earth.
I find the alternative hypothesis to the creation of the Earth extremely flawed however, based on much research. Most obvious is the fact that the Universe had a beginning (proved by the doppler effect showing an expanding universe) and the fact that the cause of our universes existence without the need for a transcendent creator does not explain the origin of the natural laws within the universe or the origins of the matter and energy within the universe itself. But that opinion of mine does not fit in to the question asked, so I will stop there and let you decide!

Undeniably, our solar system shows a great deal of symmetry, and was probably well planned out in advance. The inner terrestrial planets were probably created by assembling smaller planetary fragments into planets. No doubt the angels have the technology to do such things. The order was given by the Almighty, and the angels proceeded to carry it out. The planets were assembled, and placed into their proper orbits. The outer gas giants had to be formed by some other means. Anyway, it seems apparent that earth was specially selected to have life on it, and so placed the appropriate distance from the sun. The moon was probably formed elsewhere, and escorted into earth orbit by the angels, at the precise distance from earth to make solar eclipses possible, and to absorb the impacts of a great deal of space debris headed toward earth.

Am I going to believe in a theory that was made about 2000 years ago or another theory that was created recently with scientific instruments and logical explanations. I don't see the difference from believing how the earth was created through christianity, judiaism, islam or the ancient Greek religion. How can you see objects in the sky that are thousands of light-years away if the earth was created about 4,000 years ago?
OMG sparkiplasma's I'm not alone!

40% of Americans still believe that God created the Earth in six days. I know, funny, stupid, but sadly it’s true. God and Religion are just man-made nonsense.
Imagine you’ve just been launched into space, you look back and watch the Earth through a rush of clouds turn into a beautiful blue green and white coloured ball. Seems so peaceful, how could such an inspiring serene picture be home to so many violent selfish greedy human residents.
The hours pass and Earth turns into an ever reducing multi-coloured little marble, and all around is darkness pitted with twinkling white stars. You strain your eyes and watch Earth disappear into a barely visible flicker of light, and still all around is just darkness pitted with twinkling stars.
You fall asleep and when you awaken everything looks the same. Darkness scattered with distant stars. You’re lost, you have no idea where Earth is, up down, left right, Earth has gone for good. Everything is just darkness and stars in every direction you look.
Now ask yourself, do you really believe that violent life on some planet that you’ve no idea where it is, has the answer to everything around you.

The earth was created during the formation of our solar system.
Planetary formation
Main article: Solar nebula
It is not known with certainty how planets are formed. The prevailing theory is that they are formed from those remnants of a nebula that do not condense under gravity to form a protostar. Instead, these remnants become a thin, protoplanetary disk of dust and gas revolving around the protostar and begin to condense about local concentrations of mass within the disc known as planetesimals. These concentrations become ever more dense until they collapse inward under gravity to form protoplanets.[9] After a planet reaches a diameter larger than the Earth's moon, it begins to accumulate an extended atmosphere. This serves to increase the capture rate of the planetesimals by a factor of ten. [10]
When the protostar has grown such that it ignites to form a star, its solar wind blows away most of the disc's remaining material. Thereafter there still may be many protoplanets orbiting the star or each other, but over time many will collide, either to form a single larger planet or release material for other larger protoplanets or planets to absorb.[11][12] Those objects that have become massive enough will capture most matter in their orbital neighbourhoods to become planets. Meanwhile, protoplanets that have avoided collisions may become natural satellites of planets through a process of gravitational capture, or remain in belts of other objects to become either dwarf planets or small solar system bodies.
The energetic impacts of the smaller planetesimals will heat up the growing planet, causing it to at least partially melt. The interior of the planet begins to differentiate by mass, developing a denser core. Smaller terrestrial planets lose most of their atmospheres due to this accretion, but the lost gases can be replaced by outgassing from the mantle and from the subsequent impact of comets.[13] (Note that smaller planets will lose any atmosphere they gain through various escape mechanisms.)
With the discovery and observation of planetary systems around stars other than our own, it is becoming possible to elaborate, revise or even replace this account. The level of metallicity is now believed to determine the likelihood that a star will have planets.[14] Hence it is thought less likely that a metal-poor, population II star will possess a substantial planetary system than a metal-rich population I star.

Don't YOU have any ideas? Either the Big Bang or Nebula Theory comes to mind to many. To others, the Creation Theory comes to mind. Please ask a more original question? This is really boring. Next you'll start asking such mundane questions as "What is the Meaning of Life?" which has been asked about 500 times this month alone. Your question has been asked and answered a multitude of times and the SAME people have answered it repeatedly time and time again...!

One evening, back before time began, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit were sitting around in the unity of their Godhead, knocking back a few Cinzanos and discussing one of the Father's favorite topics.
Seems from forever He had this thing about creating. And while they were talking, suddenly God the Son said, "Ya know Dad, that sounds smashing. Why don't we do it?" And God the Holy Spirit nodded and agreed.
So they sauntered over to the edge of infinity and God the Father said, "Let there be Being." And God the Son spoke (for He is the Word), "Being, be." And God the Holy Spirit brooded over the Word spoken and POOF! Being was.
Seriously, folks, we don't have a clue about the actual mechanics of the operation. So what? Show me where it says, even in the fine print, that we have to understand it before we can enjoy it. Heck, we don't understand electricity, but I seriously doubt that keeps anyone from turning on a light after sunset.

Sugar and spice and everything nice. Did God tell you himself or are you reading from a book that had 13 Gospels ommitted by drunken clarics who were jealeous of anyone with bigger genitalia than them. For the record I dont know how or if the earth was created, but I think that you will definately find out on yahoo...

Millions of years after the Big Bang, a big chunk of matter was attracted by the gravitational pull of an average-size star and began to orbit that star.
Once it began to orbit the star, the mass of the chuck began attracting gases with its gravitational force. Over millions of years, this gas reacted chemically with other gases to form on atmosphere.
Meanwhile, substances within the chuck were forming as a result of the stuff gravity attracted, stuff like water and dirt and rock and such. Because the heart of the chuck was really hot, it provided a catalyst for some of these reactions.
Then Adam and Eve showed up 6140 years ago and slew all the dinosaurs.
I guess I'm wierd.
