is there something specific I can actually do besides saying it, putting a magnet on my car, and go about my life and forget there are people dying elsewhere from my country?
please give me actuall examples of things I can do that are beneficial to them besides standing by while they get deployed again and again? (done my time, honorable discharge thank you)

Encourage them to talk about it, not as a good or bad war but just as an experience. As a Vietnam veteran, I don't agree that I'm supposed to keep everything bottled up. This myth was also applied to popular wars; I don't trust those who tell us it's something that shouldn't be talked about. That's not natural or healthy.

There are lots of charitable organizations you can either volunteer for or donate money too. Here are a few links:

You can also sponser car washes to support the troops and their families at home. If you have children get there classrooms involved in writing letters to the troops or sending care packages.
Thank you for supporting the troops!

First of all, thank you for your service, my husband's a vet too. Most VFW Posts, and American Legion Posts have care packages that they send to the troops. They are always accepting donations. Also, volunteer some time at a VA hospital. Many of our vets older and young, are horribly disabled, no arms, legs, their mental capacities are in some cases almost non-existent. They love to play Bingo, eat snacks, or just talk. It's very sad to see them, but it makes you feel so good to have brightened their lives for a bit. Contact your AL, or VFW for days they visit. You could also visit a National Cemetery to just walk among the graves, and maybe lay some flowers. God bless you for caring!!!

first off as a military wife whose husband is "over there". I thank you for even asking to help. There are many ways-Prayers, websites to send phone cards to the troops, thanking them when you see a solider in uniform, cheering them on. Check the web under military or helping troops-with the holidays coming up I am sure there are ways you can really make someones day!

Having served in Iraq (hoping to go again soon), I really liked getting packages. There are many organizations that can be found on the web where you can pick a package and send it to any soldier. A few references are anysoldier.com treatanysoldier.com operationac.com I just did a google search for "sending packages to the troops" and there are many options. Thank you for your service.

write letters to military personnel deployed overseas. There are organizations that will give you the name and deployment address of someone who isn't getting any mail. I know Dear Abby had an address during desert storm, and I'm sure its still available. Ask at the veterans hall in your city.

Since you've done your time, I'm thinking maybe you would have some suggestions as to how we could really support the troops. My husband is a VietNam vet and I have a suggestion. When they come home, let's thank them and NOT call them baby killers and spit on them.

give them prayer and that will certainly help also just little things like if you go to certain websites you can send them free cards. please pray for my daddy and i hope he gets home safe. only three more weeks! i am so happy i could cry. and please dont listen to idiots who think that this war is pointless. it would have been ten times worse a few years down the line
