Hi, well most of the time people do work and come in and out at different times, so preparing meals and setting up a table isnt ideal. I dont really see the big deal eating around a table, i know like you say its to communicate, but you can communicate whilst sitting on the sofa and watching telly. I rarely remember sitting at the dinner table, because we just havent the room to put a table. But since i met my fiancee, when i go to his familys house and have tea, they sit around the table and iits very family orientated, but noone really speaks as it is rude to speak with your mouthful, so its hardly communicating, Yet if your not sat together and watching over people eat then you dont mind if you accidently drop something from your mouth or talk with your mouthful as your not directly sat infront of someone.

Our family sits around the table 3 times a day - breakfast, dinner (those that aren't at school)and tea and the kids sit around again for supper.
It is an important event in our family life, and a time where we can all speak to one another. It is also an important lesson for the kids - learning routine, manners, being able to listen and share. These are important life skills.

I find that in today's society so many people are working two jobs just to pay rent and put food on the table to begin with. When the family has teenagers the teens are out so often with friends and extra cirricular activities that they are no home for dinner time and it is seen as not cool to hang out with your family. My family was so involved in so many things (dance, hockey, town council, obedience training for the dogs, singing lessons) that we hardly ever had all of us at the dinner table at the same time and place.

this is just what i think abpout at times.Chnaging lifes styles, longer working hours..etc.i have two children and because my partner runs a buisness it is often difficult to sit together..but sundays i make sure we all do..as the od Swedish saying goes"those who eat together ,stay together".Comuication is important for any relationship..atho society has changed you must do what i do and keep those family value going..one of the reasons why we have so many teenage binge drinkers is becuase alcohol was not introduced properly as a sit down with the family sort of thing!!
i hope i have given you a useful insight..it is what i think..go back to the 1950,s is what i say.

many families sit around the dinner table and communicate
it is a choice
we have lots more opportunities these days
more things kids can get involved in (dance, sports, music, etc)
more parents working more hours
these things make it harder but it all comes down to choice
if families see value in that kind of communication, then they can choose to have it
we had to put some pretty serious consequences our teenagers to "encourage" them to be there for dinner and to participate, but it can be done

Life is just too fast now with 24 hour TV ipods etc , we would willingly go back to how home life was 50+ years ago when people had time for each other, if we say good morning to our neighbours the look we get back you would think we were going to mug them!

My family eat around the table together on a regular basis. That's not to say we get along.

Today, people are too into their work and stressed out from it too. The children are also stressed out from school, especially from the ages 13-17. Today's modern life stresses out everyone, and this problem may seem little, but it affects the family alot, especially the children.

My family still sit at the dinner table together and chat.I have only got my son living at home now and he my husband and myself sit down togerther and eat every night. but my daughters visit everyday with the grandchildren so we sit and have our lunch at the table, grandchildren too. I think it is very important to eat together.
