She might have used this as an excuse. There is no real reason to discontinue a genuine friendship because clerics are having a disagreement.

I don't believe that, you wouldn't discontinue friendship over what the pope said. You might discontinue a serious relationship over somethings you found out about a person.

It was probably a timing coincidence. It was also a good idea. Muslims have funny ideas about women, and Christians are better off sticking to their own religion, which was probably challenged by the muslim guy.
