I do not want to put him in a kennel. He has a fenced yard and doggie doors with access to the house. I have made arrangements for someone to feed him and play daily. He is well trained. I'm wondering if it's best to close off some of the house or leave things as normal as possible. I will be gone one week.

I depends on how well he does alone. If he is fine when you leave him alone then I would say just keep the house in it's natural state. If he tends to destroy things while he is alone, then by all means save your house! I'm sure he'll appreciate having someone visit and play. Have a great vacation!

Other people are saying it is unsafe to leave him in this situation...but I disagree. If someone reliable is coming to walk, feed and check on him daily I don't see what the problem is! I ran a pet sitting business for 7 years and many times this was the situation and I never had any problems. Unless he is a total escape artist I would not be worried, and as long as the caretaker is reliable. Is your dog ever destructive in the house..if yes, then do limit his space. Also, he left alone often, is he used to it or will this be the first time he had been alone for extended periods of time. You can always hire someone to stay overnight as well if he has not been alone in the past. I think your house would be much safer with a dog there AND someone stopping over daily to keep an eye on things and to switch lights on and off and to make the place look lived in. I think removing you dog from your property and having NO ONE keep an eye on the place would be a much more likely situation fro someone to break in! Also, dogs do better and are happier in their own environment. He will not get much attention in a kennel either, mostly just interaction at feeding time, and he may come home with kennel cough, fleas or ticks. If it is a really good kennel, and they are not very busy..they may provide dog walks, but most places are SO busy they don't have time.

I have heard of a lot of "spas for dogs" and they are really nice. I know how hard it is to think about if he is mistreated in the kennel but most are very well taken care of now, espescially for all the laws out there. Do you have any friends that would dog sit for him? How about your mom or dad. He could spend the night with a family or friend that he knows well and during the day he could be at home. It will be better than leaving him at home the whole time. He also would not get so lonely and be happier to be with someone. Then you wont have to worry about having a house torn up when you get home either. He will be with someone you trust at night and somewhere he trusts during the day. That will make everyone happy and feeling pretty good about the decisions being made. I hope this helps!

This is a bad idea. Anything can happen while you are away and the dog is alone in the yard, he could get out or anything. Your dog will get bored and lonely, and tear up whatever he has access to, since he will be alone for extended hours.

If you dont want to kennel, and there is nobody for him to stay with then. Whomever feeds him should be able to spend hours at the house, to let him out play with him. And this needs to happen more than once a day!

Just because its a dog, doesnt mean that its ok, to leave him alone so long. You wouldnt do that to a child? And if you say well its just a dog, then you shouldnt be allowed to have one.

Kennel the pup, alot of ppl do do pet sitting in their own homes!

Bad idea. Great that you don't want to leave him in a kennel and that you want him to stay at home where he will feel most comfortable, but I would hesitate. Suppose your dog gets out of the yard - accidents happen. Now your house is exposed to crime - and you won't know about it for a whole week. If you can leave an opening big enough for a german shepherd, it's big enough for a criminal, too.

I, too, would think twice about leaving my dog for a week with just someone to come over once a day to visit. People steal dogs, or they can get loose, or they can get hurt/stung by bees/bitten by animals. Maybe you could have several different people come at several different times every day? I wouldn't leave it more than about six hours at a time without SOMEONE checking on it.
