I quit smoking cold turkey. You have to want to quit or nothing will work. My mother died from lung cancer 3 years ago. I've been smoke free for a year and a half. Desire and comittment. There is a website called quitnet that keeps track of cigs not smoked and money saved. Good Luck!!!

You have to reform your habits. If you smoke in the car, make it off limits. If you smoke while on the phone, keep them out of reach. Identify the times when you want a smoke and do something in place of it. You can also try weaning your self off of the nicotine, buy cigarettes with less nicotine and keep going until your down to 1mg brands. They won't taste as good but that is a reason to quit. The patch works well also. I hate to admit it but I am a smoker and I'm not yet at the point to quit.

Good luck!

Statistically speaking, the best way to quit is through combination therapy. The best combination for quitting seems to be Zyban and the patch. Zyban is actually an anti-depressant known as wellbutrin or bupropion that has the side effect of making you feel like crap when you have a cigarette. The patch will help you ease through physical symptoms and the Zyban will help you through mental cues. Zyban is prescription only, but it works fairly well. Some people will even use the gum with both of these for quick fixes. From personal experience, cold turkey is really difficult, Zyban helped the most and I used the gum for cravings. I went off the Zyban after about 2 months when I felt ready. Good luck.

Have a firm belief or reason. Why do you want to quit? Is it because it's bad for your health or is it getting way too costly? Do you want to prolong your life or does your mate dislike it? Ask yourself questions and be honest with yourself of why I am doing this. I quit "cold turkey" when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. And after the pregnancy, I breastfed so that I wouldn't smoke too. And now the breastfeeding year is almost over, I realized that I don't need to smoke because I have a reason not to and that is my daughter. It also feels great not to have smoke in my hair or smell of it on my clothes and I'm healthier than ever. It wasn't hard for me to stop quitting because I knew if I didn't stop, I would have put my daughter at risk. She was my reason and it was all I needed. I hope this helps you and good luck!

cold turkey worked for me.

Its only tough for the 1st 2 weeks then after that its mostly in your head, think of yourself as an ex-smoker, that helps and forbid yourself from ever having another smoke in your entire life that will help keep you from slipping.

Remember 1 smoke can make you fall back into your old bad habits so don't do it, I ended up having to quit twice and the second time was worse and I felt stupid because I had it beat and I slipped back into a pack a day habit again.

Plain and simple cold turkey. Try to stay away from smokers, do not drink alcohol because it makes one want to smoke. change your daily habits and chew on tooth pixes or chew gum when the cravings arrive. I would stay away from people for a few days so you can clean your body out with lots of water. Good luck I know it is hard because I am quitting myself. Not a heavy smoker but I wish someone could just cut the cravings out of our mind. I will let u know how long I stay off of them this time. For Good;-)

The best physically (but also the most difficult) is cold turkey. Emotionally, your friends & family may want to back off for a while. Sincerely I wish you the best of luck.

By the way - gabs - are you serious? If what you said was true my dear, then you have found the secret to cheating death. Do you want to live forever?

Just do it you lazy weak link! I'm tired of the I can't stop smoking BS. The reason you don't quit is because you don't really want to quit.

Although your smoking-related health problems are a financial drain on our society, it does create jobs for nurses, doctors, etc.

So, either quit sniveling about it and just quit or get a bumper sticker that says "I smoke for your job security."
