Well, bairaq s has attempted an answer, thank you, but it is question begging. It is no good saying that Mohammed has brought the Qur'an since then the question merely becomes what has the Qur'an brought that was new...?

I hope my weak english will help me to answer this question so I'll put only few things:
The more important thing that Prophet Mohammad brought is the Qura'an which is the true book to all people and have all details for the best life. Most of muslims do not realize the qura'an and they try to understand the Qura'an as they want not as the Qura'an need. If you have read about Islam and Qura'an you'll be able to understand what I mean. I don't want to go far of your question but I know you'll ask your self what is Mohammad brought Qura'an means. Also the prophet Mohammad had convert the people to civil life and put all the necessary laws for them to be able to live civil life and it is still good to our days.

What did mohommed bring that was new? Nothing really. The koran is just his cobbled together mixture of the bible (old testament) and a number of "holy" books from arabic paganism. Since there was no evidence for the truth or reality of any of them in the first place, it can be assumed that there's no "Truth" in the koran either (or any other so-called holy books either).
It can reasonably safely be assumed that the koran was wiitten in order for Mohommed to give himself respectability and as powerful backup to support his plans for empire building. By using the verses within it, he could coerce his own followers to fight to the death and terrify "non-believers" into converting. As can be seen, it worked only too well. The trouble is that an empire that should have worn itself out over a thousand years ago still survives to this day. A tribute to the gullibility of the human race (and the west's (lack of) education system).

I do not really care about what this old man said, we are what we are, we do not give a sh.t about what anyone think of us. If you think we are good or bad, terrorists or not!!! what this old man said is a part of secret agenda by the Bush and extreme right wings in the west to trigger more hate and anger in the Muslim world. He knew well what he said, he knew what the reaction would be. He saw this few month ago when the pigs from Denmark drew insulting picture of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Unbelievable, they steal the land (Iraq,Palestine, Afghanistan), steal the wealth and oil, kill the people, insult the most precious symbols that these people got left which is their faith! again we do not give a s.it of what he said or what you guys think. We are a milliard and two hundred millions, you can steal our land and wealth but you will not be able to steal our believe! we believe, love and respect Jesus. I say it because our religion has taught us to do so unlike some other low people claim to be civilised

The guy scares me. Even his picture makes him look like a weasel. He has released an apology but what is done is done. Damage between Christians and Muslims. I only hope that they recognize that he is just one man and does not speak for all Chirstians.

He has also says that the Roman Catholic church is the only true church. The RC church is having a hard enough time getting people in North America to follow its doctrine. With this guy in the big seat I think they will lose a lot of followers. Unfortunately, just like with a Queen or King, once you are in it is a lifetime appointment. To me it is just an example of the fact that it is man and not God who votes on who is the pope. I don't think God would put such a scary man into power in such a time of turmoil.

A former RC.

Few religions are new - just a rehashing and amalgamation of existing myths and ideas. Islam drew on many common sources with Judaism and Christianity.
There is a sceptical, annotated online copy of the Qurran, if anyone wants to check it out, to be found at Sceptics Annotated Bible.com

Popes usually like to give sugar-coated statements to the public.... so to hear this from a current pope is very surprising... unless backed by an agenda...

Shouldnt there be religious tolerance first, and dialogue second??

merkel was defending him on the basis that he wanted to strike a dialogue, but she is too closed-minded to know how a dialogue works

Have you actually read what the Pope said?

Here is a link to the English translation of the Pope's controversial speech: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/speeches/2006/september/documents/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20060912_university-regensburg_en.html

With love in Christ.

I think this new pope needs to question his own religion in the same way; Christianity was spread by violence too.

He should apologise.
