No-one can tell you how much to mix, because no-one knows the area you are trying to cover, or to what depth!! The best way to start it to pick a simple subject you enjoy, make a sketch on your board or canvas, and, starting at the back, work forward. If you have painted using water colours, you will need to forget most of what you have learned, because in watercolour you put the lightest shades in first then gradually the darker ones. With oils you put the darker shades in first, because oil is opaque so you can put the lighter ones over the top. Never use white spirit, always proper, distilled turpentine or one of the specially formulated meduims available- this should help your painting not to darken with age. Always, always buy the best brushes you can- three good ones is much better than 10 cheapos . Buy some cheap boards, and practice a lot, but its a wonderful hobby, and what you do to start, is start!!!!

Never mind trying to mix something into your oil paint to make it dry quicker. You don't need it. The paint must go through its natural drying process; if not, it may become brittle and break away from the canvas.

Simply use an odorless paint thinner and start enjoying yourself. Put down a dropcloth and have a roll of paper towels handy. If you use standard oils you may consider placing some of your paint on a paper towel to take up the excess oils from it.

Look in the telephone directory for an instructor; the move will be beneficial for you.

I don't think oil paint can dry much faster than anyone would like bec. it has to dry on its own,& although the surface may be dry to the touch, the inside of it (the earlier paints you put on the canvas) will really take 100 yrs. to dry (yes,100 yrs.! -I learned this in Art school). But to blend oil paints much more smoothly on canvas, use linseed oil,but if you thought you put on a paint too thickly, use a small amount of paint thinner,& also to clean your brushes.

Have you considered an art teacher? Or, more research on the I'net. Trial and error practice isn't a bad idea either - it's where experience comes from.
