This depends on the OS of the system. IF you are running Windows XP, the format command will not format the OS system sector. But, If you really want a total wipe, then use the original OS CD disk and start from there. Format and reload the OS, then all programs, then all data . I would screen all data for virus and worms before I put it back on the drive. Why do you want to format??? That is a step that is very drastic. You can delete (un install ) programs, do a disk clean up, then repack (defrag)the disk and avoid all the hassle of program reloads. AND, if the drive is getting old, you may just want to replace the drive with a new one, load the OS and programs, THEN format the existing disk as a back up or secondary drive. Good luck

I, though, would junk the stupid thing and buy an Apple. I have no problems with this machine.
