...Have serious trouble with some core belief of that group (like the literal resurrection of Jesus to Christians, or rebirth/reincarnation to Buddhists) do you think it would be acceptable to join that group anyway with the intent to try to understand that doubted tenant better later? But that you should be perfectly honest in the present and say that you do not believe it but you will stay open to the possibility?

I suspect I will get very different answers from Christians than I will get from Buddhists...

I really don't see the point about "Joining any Belief System" I decide every one of my beliefs individually based on evidence and reason, and would never reach a belief only on the say so of some group.

Buddhism doesn't demand its adherents stick rigidly to any doctrines-whatever you are comfortable with believing is acceptable to Buddhism , in fact it openly encourages people to follow their own judgement rather than blindly adhere to the teachings of others. Buddhism is based on practice and a way of life rather than belief in a set of doctrines.

I don't know much about Buddhism, but you can find a denomination of Christianity to suit just about any possible interpretation of scripture.
