there has been a recent study that our brain feels pain in two parts. emotionally we feel it in one part and physically we feel it in another part. so chances are you are feeling it in the emotional part when they turn on the machinery.

if your dentist doesn't have a headset and a television (many dentists have these today) bring a discman and a headset so that you can turn it up loud thus blocking out as much of the music as possible. let the dentist know what is happening. a good dentist understands this sort of thing as they deal with phobia of dentists on a regular basis.

It's starts to hurt because nobody likes the dentist and they have scary sharp tools so you have this feeling that when you go to the dentist you won't come out alive! Well, that's my way of answering your question! Hope it helps!

Sounds like you are afraid. Try to bring a mp3, discman or a walkman with some really good music.
Try to talk to your dentest. If you have to try to change dentest and see if it helps. Go to the dentest with you don't have any problems not just when you have a problem, like for cleaning and you can see it is not so bad or there is nothing to be afraid of. If it hurts try to see if there is a diffrent dentest that don't hurt so much
