My kitten did the exact same thing!
She would get up and start walking on me and ask to get petted. But in reality I think 4-5am is when they start to get hungry!
Maybe you can leave some dry food out overnight for your kitty to nibble on until you get up.

I honestly thought it was just my cat, waking me up between 4 and 4:30 for her loving. Stomping on me, purring, trying to open my nightstand drawer with her paw. She knows that's where her brush is!

cats are nocturnal..... this is the time they would be coming home from a midnight hunt,,,, and relaxing before daybreak and sleep.

they have a biological clock,,,, they are well aware of time,, in a sixth sense,,,,,,,,,, they do not need a clock
