We baptist believe that if you hold someone underwater long enough, that eventually they will come around to your way of thinking.

The only time I would try to change the way a person thinks is to get them to understand the other side of things. It doesn't mean they have to agree with it, just understand it a little. For example, I'm a gay rights activist, but I at least understand why someone may be homophobic.
The way I try to open up their minds is just by being calm and friendly and not bashing on their beliefs. I would just maybe tell a story about the other side of the coin, or describe someone I know who lives that way.
I would never try to sway anyone from their beliefs. Only they have the power, and the right, to do that. But I like to open peoples' minds sometimes. Blessed be.

I don't so much try to change a persons thinking as I try to get them to examine what they believe and why they believe it.
If I believe that it is to someones advantage to change what they think about a certain belief I try to retain the dignity of that person and respect their right to believe as they do. It always holds true that no one cares what you know till they know that you care.
In getting someone to see the hazards or falsehood of a presupposition it is important to help them drive their belief to its logical conclusion as it relates to the totality of experience. This can be done by asking specific questions in response to statements that they make relating to their world view.
Example Premise: God doesn't exist.
Question: What do you mean by that? (forces them to be specific)
Answer: Christians are such hypocrites.
Question: How does that relate to Gods existence?
Alternative questions: How did you arrive at that conclusion?
Why is that important to you?
If you keep them answering questions they are put in a position to follow the logic of their thinking and at the same time feel as if you are genuinely interested in what they believe and how they feel.
This is called the Socratic method of inquiery and is very effective.

I cannot change the way people think, but I have seen the word of God alone change the way someone thinks, and watched them go from sad, depressed angry people to creatures filled with joy and set free from pain. to me, this is proof of God's existance.

I dont believe you can change a person, although you can try to change their mind.
People decide to be spoon fed things, its a choice they make. To believe whatever they are told.
I only reason with people, and expect them to decide for themselves.
Unless its my husband, in which case I stand my ground and he can either decide to see things my way, or we can fight to the death over it. Esepcially about raising our kids.
