The best camera that I have heard numerous good things about is the Casio Exilim (any model.) Try finding it for your price range on sale or on ebay.

Hi. If you don't mind not being able to fit the camera in your pocket you should get one with a good optical zoom. I have an Olympus SP500 that I've used extensively and have taken many great photos despite limited tech know-how. I recently travelled round the world for a year with my family and we used several cameras - I wrote a blog entry on how to choose one that you can read at http://homepage.mac.com/ianandpaula/iblog/C1342608480/E20060111131523/index.html if you're interested.

I got myself a 6MP Casio Exilim primarily because of its size and because of the good reviews. However, the pictures were grainy when I printed them out. I got sharper pictures using a 3MP Canon SureShot. So I wouldn't recommend the Exilim Series.
