Because back then, he has been working to establish a relationship with men because they have fallen away. He talked to Moses and through him gave humanity the Law. He spoke through many prophets telling the people to follow God. But then Jesus came along and made it possible for us to have a relationship with God. Now he no longer speaks through prophets, but he will influence us and make us into what he wants us to be through his Holy Spirit. There's also the Bible so we can understand his Will for us.

just like most of us never heard our parents when we tuned them out, man has stopped listening to God. that doesn't mean he stopped talking to us. we just refuse to be quiet and listen to him.
