I think the "Faith Hall of Fame" is in Hebrews 8. It describes how Old Testament folks were "saved by faith", just like we are! If it is not chapter 8 I know it is in Hebrews.

4000 years had come & gone, millions of people had died, but Jesus said no one had ascended to heaven up to that time period, John 3:13 says:

13 Moreover, no man has ascended into heaven but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man. Modern Translation of Bible

John 3:13  And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. King James Bible

The Scriptural teaching of the resurrection, however, is not compatible with the doctrine of the immortality of the soul. If an immortal soul survived death, no one would need to be resurrected, or brought back to life. Indeed, Martha expressed no thought about an immortal soul that was living on elsewhere after death. She did not believe that Lazarus had already gone to some spirit realm to continue his existence. On the contrary, she showed her faith in God’s purpose to reverse the effects of death. She said: “I know he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” (John 11:23, 24) Likewise, Lazarus himself related no experiences of some afterlife. There was nothing to report.

Clearly, according to the Bible, the soul dies and the remedy for death is the resurrection. You enjoy the best sleep ever, until Jesus resurrects you, sometime in the future.

There are three periods since time began. In the Old Testament there was the Patriarchal period when people obeyed their fathers. Then the Mosaic period when people tried to follow the 10 Commandments. Then when Jesus came He is to be followed. All of the people before Jesus died went to a place to wait for His death to free them. 1 Peter 3:20.

They simply followed God as best they could, trusted that He would do the rest since He is a Just and Merciful God.

How's that for a short answer?

BTW that is how tribes people in the farthest reaches of this Earth that never hear about Jesus are saved, also.

People who died before Christ Jesus cannot go to heaven, that is one of the reasons Jesus resurrected Lazarus back to life. Jesus loved him and wanted Lazarus to be with him in heaven.

In the time of the Old testament, God was a lot closer to Humanity, peoples were able to talk to HIM(God), a lot easier, thou, some of then especially the Jew's were only up to have fund, and Humanity was going down, Jesus came to fix everything, but because he didn't gave any money to the Jew's, been his self not only the Son of God but the best politician ever, they accuse Him of lying, and the opposed their self to accept him. Jesus become the way for God to exercise his own opportunity to become and into the material World born to a physical body,as I believed he has done many times, so there is not only a Second coming but the conditions and circumstances that God has promise to become HIM self to lead us out way from the material world and into heaven. there is not much difference that the one we can all use to talk to HIM and follow his commands and desire for our self to become.

By God's grace, He gave some people faith, and this faith was accredited to them as righteousness- thus granting them entrance into His Kingdom.
Romans 4:3-5
"For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness."

The Patriarchs waited in what was called the 'Bosom of Abraham', a division of 'Hell' mentioned by Jesus in the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus.

They viewed it with more fear. The God of the Old Testament was one to fear. Jesus taught us the merciful and loving side of God.
Jesus said:"Go and find the meaning of the words' What I want is mercy, not sacrifice'".
Also"Come to me all of you who have a heavy burden and I will give you rest"
And" Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world"
