HGTV.com has good decorating tips. You can buy books from Home Depot or Lowes and some of your Hobby Stores. Or try this paint the hall a warm neutral color, get a console table and a couple of paintings and some inexpensive plants, and a rug that will coordinate with the space.

it really depends on how far you want to go. if you are willing to remodel, put in sky lights or those natural "tube lighting" things. i noticed that somthing that really works at the begining of a hall is a long horizontal mirror. this helps move the eye down the hall before ever entering into the hallway. this effect makes the hall seem more open and lit up, especially if it reflects light from the other side of the hall.

get a pretty color or wallpaper. put an antique chair or table in it and maybe have some framed family portraits and photographs on the walls. maybe on the other wall put a bookshelf full of old books. this is great for a rustic house. but if you want something more modern, paint the walls white and stick a cool silver floor lamp where the table and chair might be. and in the middle of the floor, put a fuzzy shag white carpet.

Pick some type of theme, then select a furniture peice you'd like to put in that hall..halltree, couple of chairs, a side table...then add your peices(or pretties to cordinate it all). Personal, family photos work well(or try a wall full of black and white photographs is an attention getter). Invest on one item then create it from there.

You might try some of the new decorative painting techniques. They do take time, but they look really great.
