This is a good book to read. "Luther the Reformer: The Story of the Man and His Career" by James M. Kittleson. It's not terribly long or difficult to read.

In very brief terms, Luther was a Roman monk who saw that many of the practices and doctrines of the Roman church did not match with what the Bible says. He wrote the 95 Theses as a means to spur theological debate and discussion with the hope of bringing the church's teachings back in line with the Bible. The pope had a big ego and didn't want to listen and certainly wouldn't admit to being wrong. Luther would not recant anything that he said, nor would he be quiet about it knowing that this deals with the eturnal welfare of mankind. The Roman church tried to discredit and ultimately kill Luther but was unsuccessful.
