Why do some people who say the bible is the direct word of God not follow what it means? In the bible, women are property, daughters are slaves, statutory rape (i.e. a 30 year old marrying a 12 year, just for sake of argument-which is against the law in our society, but the bible has nothing to say on it) is allowed, and supposedly-I cannot remember the exact verse at this time-if you have faulty sight you cannot go before the alter of God. Women are to cover their heads before praying (very few religions follow this practice), shellfish is forbidden, and in certain cases abortions were okay. Adulterers were stoned (now you're lucky if you can take a cheating spouse to court and win) and bad children as well (now you see them on the Maury show).
So why is it okay to follow certain in the bible, and completely disregard others? Some people will say "the OT doesn't count anymore" but will condemn you with rules from it still. Opinions, please?

By the way, I'm not being disrespectful as someone else suggested, I am merely curious and I question all things I don't understand. I refuse to remain ignorant.

In addition, in earlier days if a women was on her period, she was considered unclean. Why is this as well? Why were women considered so inferior? I don't believe God meant for women to appear so much less.

One of the classic ones are the homosexuality thing. It says in the bible that it's wrong, and the thumpers will never hesitate to point that out. But they'll say this while wearing clothing of many materials, which the bible also condemns. They cherry-pick, and many decent Christians are tired of it. They've got some self-reflection to do, and they're too busy pointing out specks of wood in peoples' eyes that they don't notice the log in their own eyes. Blessed be.

All the laws we have today are taken from the Ten Commandments but are not kept as they really are meant to be. There was a time that a man that killed another person would be killed for that act but because of a lot of spineless wimps that don't have the backbone to stand up for what is right, a convicted killer that maims, tortures and rapes their victim or victims, will normally outlive the sentence. He will die before the sentence is carried out by way of all the appeals and such and then the method is challenged as it is too cruel. Was it too cruel to molest and torture his victim and cause all sorts of pain and suffering? Guess not as he will have all the rights to get as painless death as can be had if at all when the victim sure didn't have a choice in the matter.

Women were told they would be subject to their husbands as they were the first to sin and caused man to sin also. In the laws that we have made a lot of the things God intended is not carried out and sin prevails in our society as it did in the days of Noah, just as the bible predicts just before Jesus comes. If the laws that are in the bible were kept as should be done, you would not have the kids on Maury or the killing in the schools as is done now or any of the other atrocities that occur daily. It would be much more peaceful and people would get along better. It is not the biblical laws that are bad but the going away from them that has been the downfall of the world as we know it today.

The truth of God never changes, but people do. It is our sin nature that causes us to fall away from God's commandments. The Old Testament does count because God never rescinds his law. Jesus brought us a better way, however. this does not mean that we throw out the Old Testament. this does not mean that we are free to disregard the Ten Commandments. It means that we have a true means to salvation---the blood of Jesus. It is our lifestyle that needs improvement---a Christ-like walk. As far as obey the 622 points of the law, that is no longer necessary because Jesus fulfilled the law at the cross, but we still must honor the Ten Commandments and consider the Old Testament as valuable resource in our walk back to the first estate, which is total fellowship with God.

Christianity is the one religion where you can choose what you want to adhere to, unlike some others where the word is the word, and it cannot be changed. That's what all this terrorist crap is about. That and of course they're crazy. Most Christians realize that pork no longer can kill you, same with shellfish. The bible concerns itself with a way of life, much of which is no longer relevant. Perhaps that's what the bible is, the way to safety, no science, and no cheating spouses and no mouthy kids.

I fail to understand why anyone would believe such nonsense. The New Testament is no better than the OT. Have you ever read Paul's letters? He was a total jerk.

You believe in a book that has talking animals, wizards, witches, demons, sticks turning into snakes, food falling from the sky, people walking on water, and all sorts of magical, absurd and primitive stories, and you say that we are the ones that need help? OKay, so you follow the bible to get your morals? Don't claim this is the Old Testament because it is still God's word therefore just as significant and lawful as it was then. God's word should not change nor his teachings. If they do then he can't be all knowing and powerful.

"A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death."
-Albert Einstein

The Lovely Morals of the Bible:

"The glory of Israel will fly away like a bird, for your children will die at birth or perish in the womb or never even be conceived. Even if your children do survive to grow up, I will take them from you. It will be a terrible day when I turn away and leave you alone. I will love them no more because all their leaders are rebels. But now Israel will bring out her children to be slaughtered." O LORD, what should I request for your people? I will ask for wombs that don't give birth and breasts that give no milk. And if they give birth, I will slaughter their beloved children." Hosea 9:11-16

"The Lord on his part has forgiven your sin: you shall not die. But since you have utterly spurned the Lord by this deed, the child born to you must surely die." Samuel 12:11-14

You're god condoned war past or not it is in the bible which you believe in did god change his mind? Seems strange for an omni-perfect god huh?

"If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Deut.13:7-12

"So the LORD our God handed King Og and all his people over to us, and we killed them all. We destroyed all the people in every town we conquered men, women, and children alike. But we kept all the livestock for ourselves and took plunder from all the towns." Deut. 3:1-7

Lord says 'I will bring evil upon you out of your own house. I will take your wives and will give them to your neighbor. He shall lie with your wives in broad daylight. Samuel 12:11-14

1 Tim 2:8-11 women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

You can be a Sex Slave too!

28: If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; 29: Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days. Deuteronomy 22:28-29

"When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property." Exodus 21:20-21

I like a good sensitive question, though some times we get too cough up, into becoming good judges even to judge God, and his book, The bible, we judge Him sometime even in the grounds that creation was done only because his own benefit and because of his own selfish desires for HIM self to become God. believed me, I like all of what you have taking your own time to express, the use of our own gift, of Intelligence, is what can't save the world, but can keep our self's, ready to try??, at least in the process we can save our self, and who knows in the process if we continue to express our self the right way, we can even have the chance to try to help, in this process of changes, difficult times, for Humanity, god HIM-self as well than his own creation. best of all, this is ward between believers and non-believers. Choose to be a believer. and I firmly believed in what you have said, as HIM(God), has giving me the opportunity, to believed in the true of what you have said. God bless you in Jesus name Amen. He is the only one who have the right answer, and we will know it went the time comes. There is a tree, of good and evil acknowledge, its a sacred tree, though we can all have the chance to reach it, though it will depend on us to use such knowledge the right way. let us be free, thistimes are dificult times to worry for what we can't understand. Remeber that BIBle means "Basic Intructions Before Living Earth". so is up to us tmake a good interpretations of what God means, and wants from Life and from the Living reatures he cr4eated to experience, grow, learn and multiply, before we can reach out to heave.

Do not doubt God's word, the Holy Bible. It could cost you an eternity in hell. This might help.
The Holy Bible!

“The Lord gave the word (The Holy Bible); great was the company of those who published it.” Psalms 68:11. Parenthesis mine!
“All scripture (The Holy Bible) is given by inspiration of God (God breathed), and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect (mature), thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” II Timothy 3:16-17. Parentheses mine!
The Holy Bible is alive! It has spiritual life, eternal life to give away to those who believe it.
“63It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63. “ 68Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.” John 6:68. “16Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.” Philippians 2:16. “12For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (The words “...quickeneth...” and “...quick...” means “to make alive.”) Hebrews 4:12.
The Holy Bible conveys spiritual/eternal life to all who believe that the blood Jesus Christ shed at Calvary is the only way to have all their sins forgiven, removed and cleansed.
The Holy Bible is able to save your soul.
“ 21Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.” James 1:21
That means The Holy Bible, “...the engrafted word...,” is the only book that God uses to save men's souls. That makes The Holy Bible is holier than all other so-called holy books combined.
“22Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 23Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” I Peter 1:22-23.
The word God is the only way you can be born again. To be born again means you are born spiritually into the family of God and you become spiritually alive to God. Believing and obeying the word of God, The Holy Bible, is also the only way you can have your soul purified of all sins. It is also the only incorruptible holy book on the earth today.
“ 13But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: 14Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” II Thessalonians 2:13-14.
God uses the gospel found in The Holy Bible to bring people to believe the truth, to salvation (justification), to sanctification (cleansing from sin) and to glorification.
“18Of his own will begot he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.” James1:18.
Of His own will, God uses the word of truth, The Holy Bible, to “...begot...” us (bring us into a relationship with Himself) .
Jesus Christ is called “...the Word of God...” “1In the beginning was the Word (Jesus Christ) , and the Word (Jesus Christ) was with God, and the Word (Jesus Christ) was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God.” John 1:1-2. Parentheses mine! “14And the Word (Jesus Christ) was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” John 1:14. Parenthesis mine! “1God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son (Jesus Christ), whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:” Hebrews 1:1-3.Parenthesis mine! “13And he (Jesus Christ) was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name (Jesus Christ) is called The Word of God.” Revelation 19:13. Parentheses mine!
Jesus Christ is the personification of The Word of God, the Holy Bible.
That means that Jesus Christ lived all that God the Father wanted to say to mankind.
The Holy Bible is truth. It is the only valid, authentic spiritual truth available to mankind.
“17Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” John 17:17.
Because they have the Holy spirit dwelling within them, true born again Christians are the only ones who can comprehend and understand The Holy Bible.
“12Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit) teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14But the natural man (the unbeliever) receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” I Corinthians2:12-14. Parentheses mine!
The Holy Bible is an eternal book. It will go forever in heaven.
“35Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” Matthew 24:35.
“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” I Peter 1:23.
“89For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.”
“2For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD (The Holy Bible) endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.” Psalm 117:2.
The Holy Bible has the answer to every major question that man may have if they would just take the time to search it out.
More could be said about the wonders of The Holy Bible but I think you get the picture.
So we have seen that The Holy Bible is the most fantastic, fascinating book that was ever written. We should hear, read, study, memorize and meditate upon it as much as we can all the days of our lives.
The question is: What are you going to do with The Holy Bible while you are still on this earth? Are you going to believe it or reject it?
What are you going to do with the salvation that Jesus Christ offers you?
Salvation is a free gift. You cannot work for it. You cannot be good enough to earn it. You must, by faith, receive it as a free gift. (“8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast.”) Ephesians 2:8-9.
