Ease up on him. Sounds like he has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. You can check the webmd site, the causes of this disorder, can be very tragic. Although he needs to be brought down a notch, you might want to do it in a caring way. As you said, his ego is his largest weakness, you could easily hurt him in a way that would never heal.
Put if he loves a funny prank and you work in an office with him...
unplug the handset cord at the base and tuck it underneath so it looks like it's plugged in. As he returns to his desk, you call his phone, he'll still be standing so will tug the cord harder, and boink, the cord pops out. If it doesn't pop out right away, things get funnier as he tries to talk into a dead headset. For your more resilient friends try the above PLUS transparent tape on the receiver button, so the phone is always hung up and continues to ring & ring until he figures it out.
Caution: though mild, the above could be just too much ridicule for him when everybody laughs. It works best when only you know and then peak around the corner with a warm smile. I've used this on just such a person and the warm smile just toppled those arrogant towers.

His ego will get him in the end - people will just walk away from him and that will be a massive blow to his ego - being ignored and rejected.
Why would you want to stoop to the level of humilliating pranks? That shows that you are no more mature than he, and possible less so. It says a whole lot about you, and none of it good.

find a couple of friends to help you with this:
go and find a book of some really utterly horrible romantic poetry,
every day copy one of the poems... add in the first poem that he is being adored by one who sees him everyday at school -- sign it "your secret admirer" and mail it to his home.
A friend and I did this to a guy once and he went crazy just trying to figure out who it was that had this big crush on him.
*We did not fess up to it for about two weeks and oodles and oodles of love letters later.
*In the last letter you can either add a picture of a really ugly girl or really ugly guy (go to--- ugly people.com)
Or: you can arrange for a meeting and have all your friends there to quote some of the poems

1) Make a sandwich with lots of cheese, meat, and dairy... maybe even tuna. Put it in a plastic bag.
2) Write his name on the lable in HIS handwriting.
3) Leave out in the heat for a few weeks, somewhere where it won't get disturbed and the smell won't bother you.
4) When it's nice and moldy and stinky, put it in the office fridge, somewhere waaaay in the back. You may want to do this after hours but DO NOT LET ANYONE SEE YOU PLANTING IT!
When it's found (and the smell will make sure of that) he'll be the butt of jokes for weeks, and no one will believe that it's not his.

When i was younger we always messed up cars. Pour honey syrup on the car, then use marshmallows and gumdrops on the car. Then you can add a layer of toilet paper or eggs. Then we would put oranges, bananas, strawberries and other squishy fruit behind the tires so when they back out to go to a real car wash it gets on the tires too! But if you are not old enough to drive you can always egg their house.

pull down someone's pants in front of alot of people.. or have a fart machine thing and when they bend over turn it on! or get them drunk and take humiliating pictures like of them laying on the floor with a stupid expression or standing on the table or bed jumping around or when they vomit and then post it up on the bulletin board at work... or put ex lax in their coffee. or put diapers in their locker so when they open it all of it would fall out.

How about using your time for something constructive rather than destructive. Put yourself in their shoes - how would you feel?!!! Or do you think you're so perfect!

Leave him alone, it will come back to him. It should be satisfaction enough knowing that he's not fooling anyone.
