Eye protection! Never get your hands near the blade or especially in front of the blade - use push sticks where possible. Do not wear loose-fitting clothing. Let the blade/machine do the work - never force the work into the blade. Always be sure the tool, workpiece and your body are stable and balanced, throughout the procedure.

P.S. If you've never used a tool before, is worth the trouble to get an experienced person to teach you. Save you time, injury, material, and wear and tear on the tools and blades in the long run.
