All pets - indoor or outdoor - should be kept on flea and tick prevention year round. Fleas are so easy to catch, and once they're in your house, it is not easy to get rid of them. We had a major infestation right when the topical flea treatments were being introduced. One tube of that stuff on our german shepard, and we watched fleas falling off of him. Flea infestation can lead to death, and tick bites can cause long lasting illnesses. And, believe me, ear mites are HARD to get rid of. I know from experience.
It is incredibly important to keep your dog on heartworm preventative all the time, since this can sneak up on you and take your dog from you. Revolution costs about the same for a six-month supply as would Frontline or Advantix AND Heartguard or a similar wormer for six months.
While not endorsed for dogs by all vets, Revolution is one of the best flea/tick applications to ever be available to pet owners. Do not risk the return of mange, or an infestation of fleas or ear mites, or, gods fobid, heartworm. Stick to the Revolution.

I use Ivomec from Merial sold by Tractor Supply. It is a 1% solution of Ivermectin, the active ingredient in Heartguard. As a heartworm preventative the recommend dose is 6 micrograms (mcg) per Kilogram weight of the dog. ( or 2.7272 mcg / pound of body weight). 1 ml ( or cc) contains 10,000 micrograms. A 100 pound dog would need 272 micrograms. Very small doses are needed for dogs for heartworm prevention. I will mix the Merial Ivomec 10:1 with propylene glycol and give .27 ml s to a 100 pound dog. I put in on a piece of bread and a peanut butter to the bread and serve as an h orderve. Some dogs can tolerate much larger doses used in the treatment of mange however Collie breeds or much more sensitive to it and Ivermectin should be avoided is such cases.

Heartguard kills hooks, rounds and heartworms. Interceptor does all of them plus whips. (which aren't common in adult dogs that haven't had an infestation before.)
I use ivermectin for heartworms. It's the active ingredient in heartguard. 1cc/ml per 80 lbs kills heartworm microfilaria, hooks, and rounds. You can buy a bottle of it that will last years for less than 50.00. Draw it up with a syringe and then take the needle off and squirt it down the back of the dogs throat. I've used it for over 20 yrs and have never had a heartworm positive dog. Ask your vet and they will confirm what I'm saying unless they simply want to keep selling you their stuff and making money off of you. I use frontline or advantage for fleas. If you don't want to use flea stuff now cool but at the FIRST sign of fleas get some or you will have an infestation in no time.

Your dog has not had fleas because of the Revolution. If you are looking for a less expensive alternative go to http://www.petsuppliesnet.com They have the best prices anywhere, and you can see the expiration date before you order. I have been using this supplier for years.

Heartguard is a good preventor of heartworms.
It is a chewable "treat" for the dog that tastes good. My dogs love them and eat it rite up. You only have to dose once a month.
It comes in different sizes for large and small breeds.
You can get it at most pet stores, from your vet, or try www.drsfostersmith.com.
Hope this helps

They have a shot for heartworms that works for 6 months. My toy chi had red mange and the medicine we used i gave her 1/2 cc and when it got better i quit giving it to her and we have had no other problems. I say any medicine just like in people over a period of time hurts more than it helps.

Have you ever thought the reason he has not shown signs of the mange in a long time is because he is on Revolution?? You might want to stick to that its better than risking another outbreak.
