Alright here's the scoop:
It's supposed to prevent bruising an/or uneven ripening, BUT, have you ever seen a babana ripen unevenly just by the way it's stored? Not me! I think it's just a waste of money. And for those who buy it for it's aesthetic appeal, don't they're not attractive.
Good question!!!

Bananas (and apples, etc.) release ethylene gas as they ripen. The presence of ethylene gas causes bananas (and apples etc.) to ripen faster. For example, if you put bananas in a bag, they will ripen faster than ones not in a bag, because the bag traps in the ethylene gas. Ethylene gas is neither heavier nor lighter than air, it won't float away or sink to the ground, it will hang around until air flow moves it.
I don't (yet) own a banana hanger, but I assume that bananas will last longer on a hanger due to better air flow and thus movement of the ethylene away from the bananas. I think an experiment is in order!

They are to remove pressure and allow flow of air on the banana's surface. The banana breathes in a way and when an area is blocked the gases promote rapid ripening, carmelization and aging(spoiling). Underripe avacadoes, bananas, etc. can be put in a paper bag in a warm place to speed up ripening, if needed. Fruit flies, roaches and other pests are more attracted to fruit that is spotting too. So it keeps your fruit fresh

Its supposed to keep the bananas from becoming black or brown in spots by keeping them off of any surfaces. It kind of imitates the way they hung while they were growing. I'm not sure how effective they are because I've never used one ,but that's what they're for.

I believe it's because they go brown quicker in the spots where the skin is touching something. When they are picked, they aren't ripe. Having them on a hanger allows them ripen more like how they would have.

It's just an ornamental sort of thing. I don't even hang my bananas on mine.

i think they are pretty stupid too, but i think the best reason for them is to prevent the bananas from bruising by laying or being thrown down repeatedly.
