What you have referred is not monologue and the exact meaning is as under:-

A monologue is a speech made by one person speaking his or her thoughts aloud or directly addressing a reader, audience or character.
It is a common feature in drama, animated cartoons, and film.
The word may also be applied to a poem in the form of the thoughts or speech of a single individual.
Monologue is a common feature of opera when an aria, recitative or other sung section may carry out a function similar to that of spoken monologues in the theatre.
Monologues are often found in twentieth century fiction.
Comic monologues have become a standard element of entertainment routines on stage and television.

What you have told is SOLILOQUY. All human being always think themself something or other, and sometimes talk openly as if talking to others. More or less these two are similar. Soliloquy is coming out of deep and engrossed thinking forgetting the surrounding and the people. It is quite natural.

It may be when one is doing a task of some type it helps him/her to stay on top of things. I know when I'm getting ready to go someplace or have a lot of things I must do in a short time, I'll quietly talk to myself to keep myself focused and on top of everything. Of course I'm usually alone when I do this.

my roommate used to do that..and I'd be like "What?" and she'd say, "oh nothing I was talking to myself..." It was very annoying. Mostly because I'd wanted a room to myself in the first place...but a lot of times its just that person's nature... my friends who get distracted easily tend to talk out loud to themselves

They do it to make themselves feel like they are not alone.
Or it may just be their habit of processing information.

I don't do it it all the time but when I do it's usually because I'm really bored. I try not to do it public though.

Ofttimes, it is so someone will "overhear" their griping words, but they cannot then be accused of telling someone off, as they are speaking to themselves only.

They do it to annoy someone, but don't want to do it directly at them. Their excuse is that they are talking to themselves. I know someone who does it too.

My Mom does this, and I think it's because she lives alone and has to talk just so she can hear someone, even if it is just herself.
