I know recently discharged veterans are aware because when we get out they brief us on our benefits, but some of you older veterans...you can claim for any injuries/illness you had while active duty. Even better you can claim for any injuy or illness caused secondary to a service connected disability.

Let me add that there is no timeframe in which to claim. If you've been out for 20 years and still haven't claimed no problem, do it now.

I do this for a living. I asked the question because my entire family is military and I just found out some of my uncles that were in vietnam and desert storm didn't file because they didn't realize they could. I recently requested their medical records so we can start the process. e-mail me at mjguel@yahoo if you are serious about the topic, because I would really love to help you get what you deserve for helping defend our country.

I left with a medical discharge in 1996 and they did explain to me that my disability rating could go up if I requested it at a later date, with no expiration. One of my disability ratings was 0%, which meant "yes, we acknowledge this is a problem that started while in the service, but it is not enough by itself to get you out of the service." They told me those 0% ratings can also change over the years. All you have to do is follow up with VA.
