Probably a combination of all of those things. I think it's more that maybe people are attracted to a number of people, but the only ones that last and make it to be couples... and well-matched couples, are those who are truly well-matched. It's not that they didn't have to go through a dud or two along the way of finding that person who was right for them, you know?
I do think that it is initially looks, because that's all you can go on at the very beginning. Then you start talking and it can end right there in the first conversation, or it can keep going depending on how well the personalities match up.

For WOMEN it is looks and personality. Someone who may not hit a blip on our radar looks-wise but is very charming, friendly, sexy, flirty....etc., can become more appealing and is more or less what women go for. Don't get me wrong women can be superficial and totally go for Mr. Hotstuff but mostly it has to do with personality.
For MEN I think is has more to do with looks initially. However, to make the relationship sustainable the personality factor always plays a large role for men - which is surprising but men are not AS superficial as you think.
SMELL I would have to say can help. I call this an 'added BONUS'. If a guy smells good or woman smells good then it can be very attractive. Just don't OVERLOAD the colongne in case your crush has a perfume allergy .

For a man 1st thing is looks or in some cases smell. I mean what is not better than walking by a woman and smeilling that fresh just out of the shower smell.
but in some cases it is opposites attract..good girl likes bad boy

Thankfully, human nature is more varied than we give it credit for. Genetics works by variety - the more variety and mixture in the gene pool the healthier the human race is.
On a personal level, there is just a chemistry that clicks due to the way you meet, exchange a look, something you say or do for the girl / guy, it's unique and magical. It's what makes life worth living!
People fall in love for lots of reasons, and not all of them are down to looks or surface character traits. People just recognise something deep down with which they identify.

My attraction was how smart he was. The first time i met him he talked for a long time. He had been divorced for 2 years and he caught up on his talking from those 2 years in about a month and he does not say alot now. Looked ok. Is a good man.

I can only speak from experience, but I am most attracted to people who complete my personality. I look for someone who is strong at my weaknesses, so that when we are together we make a stong whole body, mind, and soul.
