All he did was quote a Byzantine emperor that criticized Mohamed for spreading his religion with the sword. Whether muslims like it or not, not that is how Islam spread. He went on to stress how religion should never be forced on someone, how conversion should be a voluntary thing. The Pope was taking a pot shot at fundamentalist Islamic radicals. He did not mean to make fun of main stream islam. It is reprehensibl that responsible muslims should take his comments the wrong way. The Pope has nothing to apologize for.

people took offence from the bit where he read a quote from some 13th century leader who said that all the prophet mohammed ever brought to the world was violence and war (or something along those lines) so you can understand people being upset
