I started working out to a new exercise video yesterday, it was Billy Blank's Ab Bootcamp. My lower back and spine hurt really bad, and I'm not sure if thats just the 'burn' from the exercise, or if I really pulled or did something to my muscles. What is most likely to happen here, especially since I havne't exercised in awhile? Also, what would help ease the pain?
thanks!

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) usually occurs when your muscles are worked at a higher level than your current physical condition. The muscles are often sore to touch and the pain can be eased by applying ice for the first 24 hours and heat afterward. DOMS usually occurs within a day or two after an intense workout. It will often go away after several days.

If the pain occured while working out, you may have damaged a muscle (or muscle group). You will see marked discoloration in the area and it will be swollen (change in size and hot to touch). See a doctor.

You may also have problems with your Sciatic nerve. The pain will usually be very intense and will shoot down into your leg. It often feels like an electric shock. See a doctor.

Overworked muscles can be extremely painful, as I remember from assorted physical fitness tests and a rock-climbing hike or two.

You'll want to take it easy for a while and perhaps use aspercream or a similar product to ease the aches. And afterwards warm up and stretch before you actually go into a full exercise routine. And yes, a nice warm soaking bath is good too.

If that doesn't work, talk with a doctor who is familiar with sport-related injuries or perhaps a chiropractor.

Good luck!

I think Mark W is on the right track. Most likely you either pulled a muscle in your lower back or your core muscles (lower back, abdomen, and pelvis/hip) are fatigued because you worked them pretty hard. Take a day of rest, plenty of water, and tylenol (may use ibuprofren but be careful on the dose, your kidneys are likely overworked as it is). If there is no improvement in a few days, see your primary care physician.

Sounds like its a muscle thing. Or a trapped nerve. I would take it easy, take a few warm baths, lay off the exercise and see a doc if it does not improve in a few days.

And no, I am not a doctor - just someone who has overdone exercise in the past and been where you are now!

Good luck.

You need an MRI Scan before you let anyone start pulling and poking at it, more damage can be done without proper and full investigation.

I had two exploded discs, and it was just as well I had the MRI Scan - insist on it. Incidentally, did you know that 1% of the population has 'doubled-rooted nerves'? makes things a lot more painful and sensitive.

If you want some information on pain management, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Take care!

I know exactly what that it, I have had it in the past. It is your SI joint(s) acting up. It is the worst pain known to mankind if you ask me. I had to go to the doctor and he put me on a Pain Patch along with some Percocet for break through pain. Shot of that you can try heat / ice but that did not work for mine.
