I'm a chef and the way i always do it is first rub your hands with a slice of bread then wash your hands in warm water using a slice of lemon as soap. DO NOT use soap as this prolongs the smell you can also do this to get rid of the smell of onions and garlic.
make sure you don't rub your eyes though.... hope this helps...

Lemon is really good, but you need to also use salt at the same time - mix a good spoonful of salt with the juice of a lemon and then scrub your hands for 30 seconds.
It also works to make your hands really smooth!
