I find this an interesting facet of what I see as Islam myself. Just last night I heard a woman on the news defend Islam on this point. She claimed that there ARE many Muslims who openly protest the Muslim terrorists. If this is so, why don't we see them? I confess her explanation did not make much sense.
I can only conclude that those Muslims who disapprove of Islamic terrorists are those of the milquetoast or reserved variety while the terrorists are those who seem to have all the testosterone-fed irrationality. However, I suspect, as do so many others, that they really don't disapprove all that much or are afraid of repercussions. After hearing about those Muslims in the US who celebrated after the Twin Towers were destroyed, I say that all behavior of Muslims in the US is somewhat suspect in my book, until I am certain they are not supporting terrorism, even in a small way.
The real question, and the difference between religions, is why Christians are not more upset at what happens when they are disparaged. First, it is clearly open season on Christianity in the US, such as the cartoon that was lately published at the University of VA depicting the Virgin Mary as having a "social disease." This served no purpose but to disparage.
While there is growing frustration in the Christian community concerning things of this ilk, so much of our so-called free speech in the last 40 years has included some very viable facts about our religious history. This, in turn, has sent many scrambling for a new source of faith and many have found it in what they call science. Many people on Yahoo Answers practically foam at the mouth to insist on the stupidity of believing in God when, I think, the fact is that they are merely objecting to some of the things people have done, and continue to do, in the name of God. They are fully justified in many of these criticisms, but the real significance is that this has created great doubt in the minds of so many others in the Western hemisphere. It is good to express doubts, but I would rather say that it is better to express one's spiritual side in positive ways, especially when that faith may be answered.
The real answer to your question concerns why people react as they do; when one draws a line in the sand and is determined not to let anything pass, that is one way of preventing dissent. Another manner is finding one's own way by making different strides in one's own faith by continuously striving for improvement. If Islam is truly serious about being peaceful, then it should make strides to finding a common ground with its western religious leaders. I believe that the west has already extended this olive branch. Neither side can claim any relationship to God if the argument continues to be the annihilation of the other, particularly of Israel.

Let's call it how it is. The reason you hear so few Muslims condemning terrorist acts is because they don't condemn them, they support them! Everyone always says it's just a few radicals and all the other Muslims are sweet, wonderful people who think terrorism is awful, well think again. It may be a small group of Muslims that carry out terrorist acts but they have the support and love of most Muslims. It's time to stop coddling Muslims and treat them like what they are. Enemies!!!

Because most of the Muslim scholors and prominently known mullas, known as Ulema (highly knowledgeable persons), are un-educated people. They claim that religious education is the real education while they do not consider the modern scientific education as education.
Most muslims offer their prayers behind these un-educated, intolerant, indiciplined, shouting (on loud speakers) maniac mullas. Thus the mind-set of muslims is moulded accordingly.
These mullas who head a mosque as imam, have adopted it as a profession despite the fact that there is no justification in islam for a imam of mosque to be a professional mulla. (i.e. to earn his bread and butter being an imam of a mosque)
Followers of other religions are no different too.

to say "muslims" in general is so wrong my friend...there we go again...the 'muslims' this and the 'muslims' that.
Have we as Christians taken a good "hard look" at what we "allow' or what we consider "correct"? Not all Christaians "hate" everyone whom is not one. Not all Muslims hate every one who is not one. Not all Christians are fanatics and the same with the Muslims. Not all Christians are "blind" to the masacres of not just non/combatant Muslims, but thousands upon thousands of Christians by the crusaders. Not all Muslims agree with the "radicals" or the "fanatics" whom call theyselves Muslims. ( I am seriously starting to believe, we all are), worthy of our ignorance...So, I say to all Christaians and Muslims and otherwise, "Jesus shall come". Please do your best to be ready;

There are only a few misguided individuals and a few incitors who are causing so much harm to their own people. Most Muslims are sane and they do condemn these radicals.

Because they love violence, they have had it for a steady diet for thousands of years and it's all they crave in the arena of politics. They can't even get along with each other-they are like that annoying family down the street that always fight with each other. But when they percieve a new enemy they all band together to save their sorry aspects! a weak people, underhanded violence does not make you courageous-just ridiculous & pathetic

I'm muslim, but i'm sure that those who name themselves muslims and terror some inocent people not only aren't muslim, but they're wild animals and even worse. in fact they dont have any logic for their belifes so they kill everyone who refuse them. in qoran, there isn't anyword about killing mankinds, unless they want to kill you. these terrorist are those that Mohammad fight with their fathers, because they were abusing his words. there's no dubt that Allah and God are the same, so if in bible you read about killing others, u can find it in qoran too. terrorists are interpreting qoran as they want, to fulfill their animal desires.

The reason they do that is because any act against them seems like an attack. They resent disturbance of their way of life, however miserable it might be.
