Its not unusual for a 5 year old to be able to recognize words - obviously, if you have taught him to do so.

But no, nothing is wrong if he cant. Perhaps now may be the time to start learning?? How do you feel about that?
Does he know certain letters, of the alphabet? It'll be real exciting - for you both, when you are living life, naturally, and he starts pointing out 'M's (for Mummy - or Mc Donalds <>) and 'D's (for Daddy) etc.

Don't put too much pressure on him, as long as he is healthy I wouldn't worry. Talk to his teacher to give yourself peace of mind.

It all depends on the child. He should definitely know his alphabet. I was reading by 3 years old. Make sure you read to him everyday and point out the words in the book as you read them to help him associate the sounds with the letters. This is what I do with my 4 year old and she is doing really well, she won't read to us but she can read what she looks at.

Yes, at least a little bit. Mine started reading at about 3 or 3 and half, little books though with little easy words. Most kids start school by five and where we are from they have to read at a certain level before passing Kindergarten so it would be a good idea to get them started as soon as possible.

My son is 5 and in kin. He was in preschool also for 2 years. He knows most of his letters. He knew them all at one time but forgets and has to relearn. As far as reading, if he picks up a book and reads it, it is because he memorized the words. They send sight words home for him to practice with, but are not teaching him phonics. They should learn to read well by the end of 1st grade.

Depends on the five-year-old, and whether or not they've been read to at all. Someone whose strengths lie in other areas might take longer. Some kids, who really have an aptitude and LOVE of reading might read even sooner.

A five year old should just be learning to read. My daughter is five and in kindergarten. The state requires that her grade be able to recognize 26 words from sight to be passed to the first grade.

Well, start teaching him letters, sounds of letters, and word recognition. That is what they are learning in my 5 yr olds class. They are on the path to learning to read. So I don't think that they have to know how to read yet. He is 5!

Children learn to read at their own speed. Help him sound out words and if he gets frustated go do something else for awhile come back to the book later after he has cooled down.
