Decay is usually a slow process - assuming that you are looking after your teeth. I work by the following rule of thumb:
Teeth with no previous cavities and good hygiene - every 3 years.
Teeth with some previous fillings and good hygiene - every 2 years.
Teeth with lots of previous fillings and/or poor hygiene - every year.
As a previous respondent said they get them 2 or 3 times per year - this is excessive, and sounds like overservicing. It's not that the amount is harmful, it's just not necessary at all. I think the US Guidelines are for every 2 years for most people?

It tipically depends. If you have a history of decay then it would be ok to take x-rays twice a year with you every six months cheak up. If not then you can have them once a year or even less then that. But it wouldnt hurt you to take it at least 3 times a year or even a lil more. It would take a long period of time and plenty of x-rays to cause you any harm. We get radiation from almost everywhere, everyday of our lives.

you can actually be exposed to quite a numer of x-rays before anything will effect you but generally speaking you only get 1 set of dental x-rays a year unless something happens and you find yourself in a weird situation needing more

There should never be a set amount of xrays taken per year. It's based on the clinical need only. The amount of radiation you receive per dental-x ray at a normal ma/kvp setting is equivalent to the amount of radiation you receive flying 4hrs at 37,000 feet.
