How about some bottles of really good wine? They can sit and relax and toast each other and when all the excitement and nerves of the wedding is over. Gives them an excuse to use the wine glasses they are bound to have been given.

Honestly? A money gift allows them to buy anything they want. Even save for a new home, honeymoon or college fund. But it needs to be given in a polite manner... for example, check out www.RainfallofEnvelopes.com.

best present I ever gave ( by measure of how it was received) was a book of prose, with the most meaningful ones to our freindship highlighted, along with some cash, but it was the book that was appreciated the most.
the best one I received was some special freinds being there, and wishing me well.
The second was towels. ( sometimes you don't havetime for laundry when newly married, but you take a lot more baths and showers.....

If they like to cook, you could get all your friends to give you their favorite recipes and make a recipe book or box for them You could also give some casserole dishes to go with it. I would have loved something like that. You could see if they have a gift registry somewhere, then you'll know what they want.

My friend got married last year, and she said the best things she got were personalized things - things she wouldn't ever have gotten for herself, but really enjoyed.
Someone gave them a set of towels with her name embroidered on one bathtowel and his one another, and their initials on smaller handtowels. She was really touched by it. (This isn't for everyone, though...)
She also got a picture frame with their names and the date of their wedding engraved on it, which she really appreciated.
I also gave a toolbox full of "household" tools (hammer, screwdriver, etc.) to a couple that was just starting out - they had asked for a toolbox - and had labels for it made with their last name.
If you know that she'll be taking his name, something with just the name engraved on it might be really appreciated.
