All small cats bury their waste. They don't want larger predators to smell it. In the wild they use loose dirt, sand, leaves, whatever is around. House cats when they are shown a litter box more or decide this is as good a place as any. A house cat in side without a litter box will try to use a potted plant, a scatter rug, anything to hide it. Now after so many years of domestication the mother cat teaches kittens. When their eyes open and when they can walk to the litter box momcat shows them the way. This is why you should not take kitten away from Momcat too young.
When you get a new cat, show it where the litter box is first thing.

Cats are just a very clean animal. Since it instinctive to go in one spot all humans really need to do is just chose that spot. So when they are kittens humans usually take the kitten and put them in a litter box. They will usually know what to do.

After a cat does its business, it has a natural instinct to bury it. Cats usually have to be shown once or twice that the litter box is there, but their natural instinct to bury their waste is what makes them use it.

cats instinctively cover their pee and poop with dirt. so, when they need to go, they look for a place they can dig in to cover their mess. never fails, unless there is no cat box and all hard surface floors throughout the whole house. then they might go in a corner somewhere, a closet, try to find someplace hidden.
unlike dogs, who mess and walk away, totally unconcerned and unembarrassed.

Cat's just like doing there business in soft or sandy soil. So it is natural for them to pick out the softest spot in your house, to use. So watch your plants!!!!

i think they like to go there because of the litter and scratching around. i've always had cats and never had to train any of them to go there. they just do it themselves. although they will piss in the house if I make them mad. they are smart and know what they are doing.

As kittens, either the mom or human owners show the them how to use it. They continue to do so because cats prefer to bury their waste.

Small cats in the wild scratch dirt to cover their feces. They don't want to smell to attract a larger predator.

Either they are trained or it's their natural instinct to go there because of the gravel.
