First of all remember that flying is one of the safest modes of transportation. Air crashes are rare vs the number of flights.
Second, before you fly you need to try to understand what the plane will do and what movements and noises are a regular part of flying and not an indication of a problem.
1. When the plane is on the ground at the gate it is usually pushed back from the gate by a tug and you may hear noises from that. You may also hear noises when luggage is being loaded and the bottom doors are closed.
2. Before the plane flies the wings have to be adjusted for more lift and you may hear noises sounding like a drill or saw as the wing flaps are extended. That's also normal. Then you may hear the sounds of the engines revving up.
3. The plane will roll down the runway and pick up speed and you will probably be pushed back into your seat as the engines are very powerful.
4. When the plane clears the ground you may hear the sound of the wheels being retracted and the bottom doors being closed. After a short while you may hear the drilling sound again as the wings are positions for flight.
5. If you are flying on a partly or mostly cloudy day, you will feel the flight get rough as the plane goes through the clouds and that is because the moisture in the clouds causes the engines to run roughly for a few seconds, and then smooth out after clearing all of the clouds.
6. The flight should be smooth and airlines always make it a point of finding the altitude which is smoothest and they also steer around and away from bad weather.
7. When the plane is about ready to land you may feel it slow a bit and also hear the wings start to adjust and the landing gear door open.

Flying scares me too, but I still do it. What helps me is to be a people watcher. I try to focus on the flight attendants. If they appear calm and collected, I feel I can relax too. This is especially helpful when the plane hits turbulence. It always freaks me out, but it's never anything dangerous. If it's a long flight and there's a movie, I watch it even if it's not that exciting. It passes the time and gives me something else to focus on other than being scared. I also like a window seat. I know that may seem weird to some people, but I like to know just how far from the ground I am. Knowing I'm still in the sky feels good.

What I do (because I am afraid to fly) is make sure I have a great book to read or su doku puzzles or something to keep my mind off it. I rationalize with myself that statistically, I am safer than I would be in a car. I remind myself that to live life, you have to take risks, and to see the world, you must fly. I also keep in mind that if my plane were to crash, I would literally feel no pain and it would be over in an instant. Planes fly so fast and have so much power that if they crash, you are dead in an instant (and probably pass out before hitting the ground anyway). Happy flying! Do not resort to drugs or alcohol to make the flight easier because it just makes it worse.

Just think about all those "special people" sitting up in front of you in first class and know that if the plane crashed they will die first. Seriously. Actually any silly thought to occupy your mind will solve the problem. Maybe have a fake smiling contest with a stewardess, or I mean "Flight Attendant". Imagine if their plane were to fly into some vortex and you would be transported either back or forward in time. Just realize that if its your time then its your time and have fun.

Prescription strength sleeping pills and alcohol. Tell your family physician you are having trouble sleeping. The flight will be over for you in a flash.
