A 'guy makeover' might help.
Take him shopping for some new, updated clothes (if you're a woman help him choose things that look flattering), possibly a new haircut or hairstyle, maybe an inexpensive modern cologne. If he wears glasses talk to his parents about contacts or having his ear pierced if it isn't already... stuff like that.
A new look can greatly bolster self esteem. I did this with a guy friend of mine who couldn't seem to get a date - when I was done with him, he became quite successful at it ;)
