When my son was born, I found out that the placenta was gritty. What causes the placenta to become gritty? I stopped smoking when I found out I was pregnant and my son was born 9 pound 6 oz.

I had a similar experience with my son. His placenta had some calcifications due to his being overdue (8 days). My doctor told me that this is common in overdue babies.

This is a true cause for concern, as it could cause problems if it happens again in another pregnancy. These are deposits in the placenta that should not be there. Discuss this further with your doctor, and ask him about implications for future pregnancies.

It means the placenta has almost reached the end of its usefulness. Not to worry tho, you get a new one the next time you get pregnant.
