After you've tried a diet cola or drinks, and then pick up a regular one, the taste of the sugar overload is overwhelming. Taste like drinking syrup. Cutting down on sugar intake is different from cutting down on fat intake. If you eat a pizza which is really fattening and prefer a diet cola with it, what is so strange about that? I think having heard people make the cracks about overweight people and diet anything is what brought this question up so many times. I'm not overweight, but if I eat a piece of cake and then try to drink a regular soda - think I'd gag from all the sugar. So, try not to think of that scenario as such a strange thing anymore - just a suggestion.

diet soda saves calorie intake. why drink a bunch of sugar when you don't have to.

I think the answers that assume just because you eat fattening foods means you are fat...that isn't true! But there is no reason to consume needless calories drinking soda...you already are eating something that is a treat anyway...why compound the decision?

the only excuse I can think of is they like the taste better? But having sampled a variety of diet drinks, I say, lay off the fattening foods and go for the real thing.

If you are already indulging in fatty foods, there is no need to add another 300 calories on top of it. Especially the way americans consume soft drinks, changing from regular to diet can really make a difference in calorie intake therfore weight gain.

To reduce the number of calories consumed. Especially if a person drinks a lot of soda. A taste can be aquired for the diet soda.....the regular ones are too sweet.

For me its nothing to do with sugar content or how healthier it is - I just like the taste. I prefer diet coke to normal coke, pepsi max to pepsi. I still drink regular irn bru though as the diet stuff just isn't the same.

As a tastier alternative to quenching thirst with plain water, without piling anymore extra calories.
But its the inverse phychological effect of this scenario- exercising a bit to burn calories, and then eating a heavy meal to compensate for the loss of energy.

Because they like diet soda. I'm one of them. Can't stand regular soda, so if we have fast food or eat out or get pizza, etc., if I don't want to drink water I will order a diet soda because I like it, not because I'm trying to compensate for calories or fat.

The people answering this so far are nuts. It's because why make it worse, but they do enjoy the food they are eating, but why add even MORE calories when they don't have to?
