I have lived in and around NYC my entire life, and believe me I don't spend $100 to $200 a day feeding myself and hauling my butt around town.

First of all, get a metrocard and take the bus or the subway anywhere that is too far to walk. Depending on how many places you are going to see, an unlimited card may be your best bet. If you buy a regular card, you get one free transfers good for 2 hours (check the website for specifics).

Don't worry about getting lost. Most of NYC is numbered, and if all else fails, remember that you are on an island. It's not like you can walk off without noticing, lol.

Breakfast: Find a coffee shop or a hole in the wall and order an omelette or egg & cheese sandwich with coffee like the natives do. Or get a bagel. Don't go a touristy type place or any place that you see tourists at.

Lunch: Carts are your friend. You can get anything from a cart. Gyro, falafel, baked potato, soup, etc... Carts are mainly on Avenues. Or you can grab a slice from a hole in the wall.

Dinner: This is the time to splurge if you want, or you can google "cheap eats" and NYC and find lots of inexpensive places to eat.

Before you go to any museum or tourist attraction, google for a coupon. NYC is expensive, but there are deals everywhere.

Go to the visitors kiosks and get the brochures for places you want to visit. Many times there is a coupon in the individual brochure. http://www.nycvisit.com/content/index.cfm?pagePkey=156

My favorite free thing in the world to do is to go to the stage door (not the front of the theatre, but the stage door) of the David Letterman show after work monday through friday. The guests start leaving the taping around 5:45 pm and anytime up until 7 pm or so. Many times they stop for photos and autographs. You can't beat the excitement for the price (free!).

Wow... that could be quite expensive. Everything is NYC is more expensive then anywhere else. I guess that what you plan to do should be how you can estimate how much money to bring. To cover food and transportation for the day, I would plan on spending at least 50... or more if you go to the "fancy" places. I would estimate about $20 for each "famous attraction" ; such as Madame Tussuad's wax museum, visiting the observation deck on the Empire State building, visiting the Statue of Liberty etc.

All in all I would guess that you could easily spend about 100-150 a night, and that's a low estimate.
I hope this helps!

Buy the Nwew York City Pass. It gets you in to are the must-see places all for about $100. for transportation buy the MetroCard. Its's about $25 for the week and you can ride the subway and buses all you want. Food and drinks depend on what kind. If you are on a low budget, $30 per day aprox. will do it. Shopping is very expensive and depends where you do it. Try Century 21. They have designer stuff for great prices.

Depends where you stay. Big hotels are $400/night Super 8 Times Square $200/night. WWW.TRIPADVISOR.COM. If you smoke $8/pk Mmeals are about $10+ depending where you go. Cab fare is unreal, subway is $2/per ride. I'd plan to bring about $1000-$3000

You'll need at least $500 for taxis, buses, museums etc.
Plan to use credit cards for the hotel and everything else.

It depends on what you're planning to do. If you're going shopping or planning to eat meals nicer than McDonald's, you're going to need some cash. Figure MINIMUM $100 a day for meals alone.
