Chiropractic has offered some temporary relief, but not much. And I'd like to avoid the drug avenue.

Any suggestions/experience that you can share?

Thanks.

Try to maintain your posture as much as possible, do simple stretching excercises like side to side, light crunches while tightening your stomach, use a big bouncy ball..place it up on the wall (Walmart less than $3) in line with your back...slowly roll yourself down the wall just until your knees are bent, tighten your stomach and hold for 10 secs..then come back up...10 reps of this. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart..place your hands slighty to the rear of your hips..bend bacwards just enough to feel the tightness in your lower back, hold for 10 secs.and release back to forward position...repeat. Also use cold/hot therapy. Place a ice pack on the area that hurts for about 20-30 minutes...switch and do the same with heat. I hurt my back last year, and was put on physical therapy. These are excercises I do now regularly and my back feels 90% better. Keep in mind though, these need to be done 3 times weekly or reduce your reps and do them daily. I promise you...your back will improve but you have to really work at it.

you don't state the location of the pain exactly, but a few things working together might give you relief.
1. Exercise, this will strenghten your back muscles, providing a beter support for your spine. You can try swimming.
2. Meditation, in order to achieve relaxation. Try and meditate outside as fresh air helps.
3. If there is something that's bothering, and you are not letting go of it, it could be the culprit to your back pains. Sometimes we ignore what our soul is trying to express through pain in our bodies, so if there's something you have to let go of, do it now.

It depends on the cause of your back pain. I have Sciatic nerve problems that started when I ran college Cross Country. I have found that strength training and flexibility exercise done on a daily basis will help alleviate the pain. I have to keep my back strong and flexible. That won't help if it's joint or muscle pain. Disc problems often require corrective surgery. Muscle problems require rest in order to heal. Hot compresses often help with the pain in all cases, but only temporarily.

best refielf for back pain is to do sit ups, thereby strengthening the abdomin which is usually too weak to support the human spine for ppl. who gain weight and do not properly stand, sit and/or walk.

drop 10% percent of your weight if overweight and you should notice an immediate change. walk or bike three times weekly and do situps everyday. start out slowly, 20/day and work it up to 80/day.

your pain is probably from the stress on the spine from the weight of the gut which is pulling the spine out of proper alignment. i know, this was my problem, before i dropped the weight and started exercising.

Have you had this checked out by a physician? My sister has had problems with back pain and they sent her to physical therapy.
