We have two cocker spaniels and they both love fresh fruit and some vegetables. I just think it is weird for dogs to like melon, apples, broccoli...I can't help but think this is good for them...does anyone know if fruit is good or bad for dogs?

my dog also eat fruits and veggies ..her fav. are peaches and bananas .

but you should not feed your dog :
grapes , raisins, onions

Raisins and Grapes:
The ASCPA (Animal Poison Control Centre in the USA) has recently published information stating the toxicity of raisins and grapes in dogs (they do not know how they affect cats yet, but advise to avoid feeding them anyway). Eating just a handful of raisins and grapes has been shown to cause kidney failure. They do not know why as yet but it might be due to a pesticide sprayed on the grapes or perhaps a type of mould found on the skin of grapes and raisins.

Onions are toxic to dogs. The toxicity is dose dependent, so the bigger the animal, the more onion need be consumed to cause a toxicity. Onion toxicity causes a Heinz body anemia. Heinz bodies are small bubble-like projections which protrude from a red blood cell and can be seen when the cells are stained. This "bubble" is a weak spot in the red blood cell and, therefore, the cell has a decreased life-span and ruptures prematurely.
If numerous red cells are affected and rupture, anemia can result. It is a form of hemolytic anemia. Onions are only one of the substances which can cause Heinz body anemia. Other substances such as Acetominophen (Tylenol) and benzocaine-containing topical preparations can also cause Heinz body anemia in the dog.

The toxic effect of the onions are the same whether the product is raw, cooked or dehydrated. The hemolytic episode usually occurs several days after onion ingestion (lowest hematocrit around day 5 post ingestion). Daily feeding of onions could have a cumulative effect due to ongoing formation of Heinz bodies versus a single exposure with a wide gap until the next exposure, allowing the bone marrow time to regenerate the prematurely destroyed red cells.

fruits and veggies are GREAT for dogs. Believe it or not it is thier natural diet, along with meat. Wild dogs have been known for raiding gardens and orchards, not just taking out the neighbors cat. Apples, carrots, broccolli, lettuce, etc. It's very good for them. Feed him what you like when it comes to fruits and veggies. There is also a various dog foods made from those ingedients. My favorite is Innova Evo. It's all natural and preserved with Vit E.

Dogs are omnivores which means that they eat vegetation and meat. It is perfectly healthy for a dog to eat both. Out in the wild, he would scavange anything he could get a hold of. Don't worry about it.

I have known a vet to put an overweight dog on a diet using dog food and green beans.

I have a dachshund that loves any kind of human food. She eats apples and watermelon and one of her favorite treats are baby carrots. Of course she gets these foods as treats and not a regular diet. She's a very healthy, happy dog.

My 2 year old nephew is like that. I've basically raised him. He's become very picky as well & will throw a fit when I try & make him eat. But I found out the things he does like to eat. He'll eat the chicken nuggets from bk or junk food. His doctors said as long as he's eating its fine. Whether its junk or not they need to eat something. People do say to me why are you feeding him chips? & I simply answer he won't eat nothing else & he can't starve. It does annoy me when they say that because it my nephew I'm raising him not them. He also loves the fruit gummy snacks & I get him the ones that are high in vitamins so he'll get the ones he needs. But there are good junks food out there that still taste great & they won't know the differnce. Popcorn for one is good for them too. & don't blame yourself. Every kid has a point when they become picky eaters. Its nothing you've done.

It depends, some fruits or veggies is not good for them, unless you want them to lose weight. If you treat them on occaision with these foods it is okay, but to give it to them on a regular basis is not healthy,it loosens the stool and will cause weight loss. If you want to feed your pups raw foods, or more holistic foods, I would suggest trying those forms which are healthier and it will tell you better ways to feed your pet..I am including some links for you...

I have five dogs ranging from 5 pounds to 113 pounds, and I keep them on a good diet with no more than 24% protein, and no more than 14% fat...no wheat, no by-products, no BHT....it keeps the dogs healthier, and their stools firmer also.

CHOCOLATE is poison to a dog, please do not feed it to them!!!

I worked in a vet hospital for a long time and I rescue pets.

my dogs are quite happy to eat anything - raw fruits, vegetables, cooked ones, crackers, rice, pasta, and anything in a plastic bag or on a plate, even garlic! they just love it a lot more than their own food, specially my big dogs.

favourites are apples, pears, peaches, bananas, and soup bones and herbs! god only knows if it's alright, but i guess they're strong and well, so it's ok.

my dogs also eat chilli and ginger, by the way!

Our vet actually recommended trying to incorporate fruits and veggies in our dogs diet. One of them eats just about all fruit and veggies, but our other two won't touch them (except for potatoes, cooked of course!)
Rice and other whole grains are also good for them!

Too much fruit isn't good, a little is fine. Fruit can have too much fructose for dogs. Veggies are great. My dog LOVES carrots! Much healthier than dog treats that can make them fat!
