What do you think of this:
I often see girls posting questions asking if they are fat, they are usually not even overweight, but people still feel the need to respond to them that they should lose a few more pounds.
But today, I have just read a question asking if a 6ft4 man who weighed 300lb was fat and half of the responses said he's probably fine! This is clinically obese unless than is 300lb of muscle.
So how come people feel the need to tell young girls of healthy weights that they need to drop a few pounds, but a clincally obese man should stay as he is? Any ideas or has the world just gone nuts........

Seph, at 300lb and 6ft4, this is a BMI of 36.5, which is classed as clinically obese. Any BMI over 30 is considered obese. I don't know whether he may have just been very muscular, but I'm just stating a medical fact, not trying to be harsh.

Also I think you got your figures wrong. Anything over 205lb would be overweight for that height.

It's an image that females should be skinny, however, today's society is much the opposite. Not sure if you read the article where "skinny" models are being turned away from the runways lately. If a man is 6'4" and 300lbs. he may be overweight unless he is a body builder and the majority of that is muscle mass. I agree. When these girls come on here asking for advice, wondering if they are overweight, when in fact they are actually underweight and people encourage them to lose more, this is where kids begin turning to eating disorders and unhealthy habits to help them to lose weight. It's sad to see people doing this and I usually try to encourage them to gain a little weight (not in fat though). If they begin unhealthy habits now as teens, then what's going to happen later in life? The world hasn't gone nuts really, there's just so much contradicting information out there on health and fitness and healthy weights, that when a person reads something, they tend to believe it and ignore the facts.

You do know that many professional football players around 6'4" weigh near or over 300 pounds and are not fat. The can have a very low percentage of body fat. My friend is 6'4" and weighs 240 pounds. He looks like a telephone pole - all height and no mass. You can't judge someone simply by their height and weight. A doctor is the best person to tell someone if they are overweight. The same goes for someone who is under weight. I have seen people on this site state that a 12 year old girl who thinks she is heavy should diet. We shouldn't make that decision. It's okay to tell people how to eat healthy or share fitness ideas, but a doctor needs to make the decision about weight loss or weight gain.

He wouldn't be obese at 6'4". Possibly overweight, but not obese. For someone of medium to large build at 6'4", they should be around 254, which is 18 stone. Maybe 17 which would be 240. I agree, he should lose some weight, but to say he was clinically obese is a bit much.

because people think woman need to be thin and it is more socially acceptable for men to be heavier than woman. however just s everything else alot depends on muscle and bone size. most people that post thees question never give enough information about themselves. IE. bone structure, muscle mass, and daily habits.
People have preconceived notions of what men and women should look like a heavier man is much more acceptable than a woman. go figure.

It's probabily a psihogichal thing.People generaly tell you whatever you expect hearing or what they belive you want to be told.Teenage girls who belive they should lose weight are not going to be convinced by answers like:your ok the way you are" because their mind is already set on their supposing extra pounds. On the actualy obesse persone it's the opposite situation. He feels complexed because he realises his problem and all that he want's is to denie it and answers feeding his denial are just what he expects...but not what he needs like in the teenage girls situation...whta is easieri s not necesary better...

Either way, they're getting what they paid for. Free advice on yahoo answers. If the girl takes the advice, she's retarded anyway, and if the guy takes the advice, he's in for a heart attack in about 2 weeks. I think its ridiculous that people actually ask questions like that to begin with. The answers they get are inconsequential.

Being a 6'5" 248 lb man, I never said anything of the sort. If it is being said, then smart people should NOT listen. It is all a matter of perception. Believe what you will, but follow your own heart.

You need to do more research on your question...if you're going to take that opinion. I man that tall would not be obese at 300 lbs. ..Unless it was all in his stomach...which I doubt...plus maybe he is into sports, like football, where that weight would be ideal for his size...give or take a couple of pounds.

People are in general view that men don't need to bother abt their weight no matter how fat they are which is just opposite in case of women.
