The best age for a child to learn a foreign is very early. In fact kids can pick up more than one language without getting mixed up right from the day they are born. They don't need to be taught just live with it.
I am a speech and language therapist so believe me.

The babies start to stutter in 7 months of life, it means they have able to learn anylanguage in the world, there isnot a right age but what it can happen is some babies have more contact with the foreign language and others no, some babies has able to learn very fast the things and others no. Try read Bakthin, Piaget and Vigothisk, maybe it help understand more about the aquisition of a foreign language.

The sooner you start, the easier it is. I am a preschool teacher and I have several three year olds that are bilingual. It is much easier for them to learn while they are young. The older they get the harder it becomes for them. I have had parents ask if I think it is OK for them to teach their child their native language. The answer is yes most definitely!!! It will give them such an advantage in life to speak several languages from early on.

As early as possible. From birth if you can. A childs ability to learn new languages in the first 5 years of life is amazing. They are little sponges.

since the child starts school. Age four or younger, that way it will be easier for the child to get used to or familiarized with the language and the language it already knows.

Are you bilingual? If so ,then there is no time like the present. Children learn easiest when they are very young. I teach in a pre-school and there are several children who speak english and spanish in the 2 and 3 year old classes. The schools here teach Spanish in kindergarten on up...it's required!

My son is 6 years old and we just go a new dog. We decided to start teaching the dog commands in German. We made a chart with the basic commands in english and then the german translation. My son picked up on this very quickly and now we are adding more and more words! Kids learn quickly.

I was told that if you learn a foreign language before age 5, you will not have an accent. So, if you want to be suprerb then theach it before 5.

You should start as soon as possible. By the time I was 4, I could speak English, Dutch, German and Spanish. Unfortunately, I have forgotten most of the latter three languages, but that's only because I didn't practice them as much as I should have.
