Ok i can really help you on this one b/c there are many things u can buy without spending a lot. Well me and my mom recently bought these really cute coffee mugs at a Charms Hallmark store that say this: one says - "I Do! and the other one says- "Me too!" and in the inside it says- "And the love never ended" (at least thats why i think it said in the inside). But anyways the mugs were only $14.00!!!!!!!!!! So u could get something cute like that or go for something orginal but yet kind of new: get them photo frames!! That always works and there's some really cute one's at Kohl's too! So yeah you could get either one of these things and they would be great! GOOD LUCK!!

Get a gift card from the place where they have most of their stuff registered. My daughter and son in law put all their gift cards together (and if you can only afford $10 bucks, then give them that), and patio furniture which they would not have been able to afford otherwise.
And frankly, you could just give them a card, or write them a letter expressing how you feel about them and wishing them a long and happy life. You are not obligated to give a gift.

You could go to where they're registered and buy them a gift certificate for whatever amount you desire. You could also go to Belk's or somewhere and find something on sale. There are lots of great items we got that we didn't register for. It's the thought that counts, not the money!

Make up and print out coupons on your computer offering your TIME to be used for personal services for the couple such as housework, yardwork, cooking, babysitting, etc for the couple to use at their convience. Offer a certain amount of time equal to the amount of gift you would like to buy. These type sevices cost money should the couple have to pay for them elsewhere.

If they are registered and you buy something from the list it will be what they want so you can't go wrong. The best gift won't be the cheapest gift, so might as well get them something they pick out.

A photo album for honeymoon pictures.
A nice 8 by 10 picture frame for their wedding photo.
Candles.
The gift of your time, what can you do to help? This is sometimes much more appreciated than a gift in a box.
