Since you hadn't transferred the title to yourself, the seller is still the legal owner of the vehicle. The fastest way to resolve this would be to go back to the seller and have them get a duplicate title from the DMV and then sign that over to you.

Some states provide for a "quick title" at an additional cost. If your state does, you and the seller should go to the DMV or tag agency together. The seller can get the duplicate title and you can do the transfer all at once.

If you cannot reach the seller, you're going to have to apply for an abandoned title. Your bill of sale will be a supporting document for the application, but the state takes its time in researching these. It can take several months to complete the process and you won't be able to register (or drive) the car until this is completed.

Good luck!

Obviously bostonianinmo is the only one who read the question. To the rest of you "...lost mine before i was able to transfer it" is the defining statement. The vehicle is still in the name of the seller, it was never transferred. Give Mr. B the 10 points on this one for really reading the question. The rest of you slow down and READ the question before you jump in and give a wrong answer.

Just contact the state where the title was issued, and they will be able to provide you with a new copy.

If you are the legal owner and it doesnt have a lien on the title just go to wherever you register yourcar and as for a duplicate title. The will charge you a few bucks for it and will probably have to mail it to you but that depends on where you are.

Go to the local dmv, or their website - and fill out a "duplicate title request". Pay them the fee, they'll reissue the title & mail it to you.
