I a young person goes to Court and says that the only reason they got into trouble is because of drink, Should the Court not make it illegal for that person to drink?

only just got a few answers and I need explain so soon.
We will take Tom for example(sorry tom)
Tom has been in trouble many times every time he goes to court ha says he was drunk.
Now the Court knows that Tom will be here again so he gets 3 months in prison ( what is the cost of that) Tom gets out of Prison and within a week is back in Court.
This time instead of prison the Court orders that Tom may not drink again for 1year. Now when the Police see Tom out all they need do is brethalise him. Why wait for Tom to hurt or even kill?

statistically a huge % of violent crime is committed whilst the perpetrator is under the influence of alcohol..... I don't think courts could realistically do much to stop the consumption of alcohol though, it is a wider social problem, and for some a medical /genetic problem..... I don't drink, I don't like drunk people, I like to know im dealing with the real person not what alcohol makes them become, its fake. my feelings are worsened towards it because the majority of people accept it as normal when its dangerous and it kills.

How young is the young person? It's already illegal (in the U.S.) for him to drink under the age of 21.

Here's the thing: drinking is not responsible for Tom's problems. Tom is responsible for Tom's problems. If Tom knows he gets into trouble only when he drinks, then Tom should give up the drink. If he is addicted, he should seek help... there are free detox places (usually the free places are church-run or some other non-profit agency).

Every time Tom chooses to get into trouble (by choosing to drink), he should receive a more severe penalty. Hard time in prison just might be the thing he needs to get sober. It helped a friend of mine.

If someone finds thyself in trouble because of drinking they have made the mistake of drinking to much or drinking something they can't handle. Is that a reason to change law.? NO. Drinking, smoking, driving, eating, sleeping, what ever...... living in general is something that is done in moderation, it's done to taste not to indulge. As far as a young people, or any people going to court only to say that there problem was the drinking, well they should look into that problem themselves. Not the court. It's not the courts problem. The court is to decide if they did or did not commit the crime . A pass penalty forr the crime. That's It !!!!! Drinking is a God given liberty. Just like all other God given liberties, if you abuse it., it's going to cause problems for your self. And sometime cause problems fo others. That's why you end up in court in the first place. And if there was no drinking involved there certainly would be something or someone else to blame for the reason the crime was committed. Never the person who is actually at fault.
Point is..... If a young person goes to court for a crime he/she committed, maybe they should just look in the mirror a bit and try to figure out what the problem is.

Interesting idea, but could never work, alcohol has been legal and accepted way to long for it ever to banned again(prohibition was a joke, just made a lot of crims filthy rich), besides there has to be a limit as to what we are responsible for, the government cannot be accountable for everything we do, they have enough power as it is, who wants Big Brother!! Education on smart/safe drinking, can only do so much, its up to us to play it safe, anything else is a cop-out!!

To make alcohol illegal is impracticable .
Drunkenness should never be accepted by the courts as an excuse for Criminal behaviour The offenders should feel the full weight of the law.

There's no need to make drink illegal. In the UK there are already laws in place to deal with drunkenness (ie. it's an offence to be drunk in a public place), there are drinking bans in towns (ie. you're not allowed to drink on the street, only in a licenced premises), and you're not allowed to drink and drive over a certain limit. There's enough in place there, but they need to be more rigidly enforced by the Police and by the courts.

an interesting question....i agree that it may well help to look at ways of preventing this person offending in the future but to make it a blanket rule is very dodgy and it must be considered how enforceable this ban would be unless they were tagged tricky but i like the thinking behind the question

first sober up and spell right, second the reason its illegal is kids drinking at young age does cause problems, hopefully with going to court young people will learn not to drink and when they get older drink responsible.

Why? Are you going to get into trouble every time you drink? Then I think it is your own responsibility to control your drinking. You want to give the government far too much control. Keep your kind of thinking the hell out of my world and my country.

I'd like to see them try to enforce a ban on any person drinking, when alcohol is so widely available. We all know its just an excuse for the stupid and antisocial.
