It's been a week since I first got this puppy(almost a year old) and he still barks and whines in his crate for every 2 hours! How can I get him to know that this crate is a good place?

i had the same problem. give this a try- when you put him in the crate, give him a small treat, some love, and shut the door. is this puppy in your room? if not, put him in there with you next to your bed on the floor. he needs to know you're there, but that you sleep above him in the bed, as you are the alpha dog, and his protector. next, if he whines just for kicks, don't let him out. make sure he's relieved himself before he goes in, and call it. in the morning, or when you come home and let him out, SAY NOTHING TO HIM. not a hi, a pat, NOTHING. by doing any of this you are encouraging this bad behavior. wait until you have taken him out to do his business, and he has calmed down a bit and then lavish him with love and praise, encouraging the good behavior he is showing you. this isn't cruel. also, whatever you do, don't feed him immediately after he comes out of the crate. this just encourages separation anxiety. give him a good half hour or so before you feed him. don't worry, this will work, it just takes time and patience. i had to do it with the whiniest pain in ****, and she's much better. it took time though. don't give up, and don't give in. you'll have a great dog.

some dogs will just not adapt to a crate. My dog hated it, so I let him have run of the house after the first week. Like the others said put favorite toys and treats in there. If he still does not get used to the idea, you may want to forgo the crate idea and perhaps cordon him off in one room if you cannot trust him to have free roam

make the crate as comfortable as possible because your dog might miss it's brothers and sisters. when i first got my puppy she was miserable and would sleep outside her crate, it was heart-breaking to hear her crying. but after 2 or 3 weeks she was more comfortable, she is now 2 years old and LOVES her crate so hang in there!♥

p.s.-the first week we shut her in for the night but now we leave it open and she doesnt want to leave (be sure to leave an old blanket on the bottem of his crate and if you dont have any toys to put in then you could just use an old sock)

My dog same way, hated his crate, after 2 years, he earned our trust so I got rid of the crate, but I have a gate in the kitchen when we are not home and that is his domain while we are gone.

I never crated my dogs. It seemed cruel, even though a lot of people do it. If you have a dog that has to be kept in a box, I don't see why you would want it. My dogs always had the run of the house after they were housebroken. A year old dog should be housebroken by now and there should be at least part of the house where he is allowed to be, unless he lives outside.

The easiest way to get a puppy use to it's crate is to feed it in the crate.

this is what I had to do. good luck.. I had to coax her into the crate with a treat..I put her down a big dog pillow and alot of toys. It took about 1 month but now she loves going in there and getting a treat.

Toys, Treats, leave music playing to calm the puppy down. I dont suggest articles of clothing because the puppy wont know the difference between it and something you dont want him/her to tear up. It takes longer than a week to get used to new surroundings. My puppy still gets excited and pees on the floor when I let her out.

pls don't crate him, there really is no need. Get some books on dog training. He is still a pup and needs to have some affection, not be stuck in a crate........horrible things they are!
