Birds have a very poor sense of smell and will still care for their babies even if touched by human hands. If the bird is not fully feathered and looks bald, then it means it fell out of the nest and should be placed back in the nest if you know where it is. If you cannot locate the nest then the bird would have be taken to a local rehab to care for it until it can fly. If the bird is fully feathered, it has probably already fledged the nest on it's own and the parents are caring for it. Birds leave the nest before they can fly and parents will feed them on the ground or in a scrub until they are old enough to fend for themselves. I think this may be the case with the bird you found as it is VERY late in the season for small chicks to still be in a nest. You can put the bird back in the nest again for safety....but it will just leave it again if it had already fledged.

If you know where the nest is, return the baby bird to the nest. The parent birds will not smell your scent and reject the baby bird since most birds have a poorly developed sense of smell. If you cannot find the nest, make a substitute nest out of a little basket or flower pot. Put dried grasses or leaves in the container and put it near the place where you found the baby bird. Chances are, the parents will locate it and continue to care for the baby.

If you find a fledgling bird, one that is fully feathered and out of the nest but calling, leave it alone. The parents are nearby and will take care of it.

If you find an injured baby bird, or one that is truly orphaned, call your nearest Audubon Society to get the name of the closest bird rehabilitation facility. It is illegal to have a wild bird in your possession unless you are a licensed rehabilitator.

To care for a baby bird until you can get it to a bird rehabilitation facility, keep it in a warm, dark, quiet place, such as a shoe box with air holes in the lid.

Put it back in the nest. The parents will continue to care for it Please do not listen to anyone that tells you to raise the bird. Possessing a wild bird is a Federal offense. You can get into serious trouble. Only licensed bird rehabbers are allowed to do this. Also, each species of bird has its own special requirements on what is a proper diet. The formula they sell for baby cage birds is not appropriate for wild birds.

By the way, birds can have lice, but they are specific to birds. I have banded birds and have handled birds covered with lice and they dont bother people.

The mother will take care of the baby. Bird's have a very poor sense of smell. So she can't smell you handld it. Now if there was something wrong with the baby like it's diseased or has some kind of genetic defect the mother was probably the one to kick it out to save her other babies and may kick it out again.

That's a myth. Birds do not have a keen sense of smell, they are visual creatures.
If you put a baby bird back in its nest, the mother will continue to care for it.

Bad news; Mother bird surely will not take her baby back. If you don't want that baby bird to die, Please take it back. You have to rise him or he will die.

Well, it's not hard feeding a baby bird. I faced this situation more than 3 times and the birdies are well till they flew away from me. ( the least I leave it to their instinct )

Food : baby food, yes human baby food!! Use the smallest spoon you could find.(straw is ok also)Bird will open the mouth when they are hungry or something pass over their face. Drop it into their mouth.. Very easy!! Little by a Little. They will eat quite often so give them little by little.

Nest : Find a bowl, a Box anything.. Make sure that it's warm..Cotton or cloth is very useful. I lost one poor bird cos of these. Keep him warm

If it fell out of it's nest the mother won't get it, she'll just leave it there. So you should take it home and treat or give it 2 someone who can.

i would take it to a place that cares for animals, like a pet store or something. at my house, a bird had built its nest in a wreath that hung on our door. the babies hatched, so i "took care of them". the mother never came back for them, so i took them to a nature center. the best thing to do for them now, is keep them very very warm.put a warm towel in a bowl and place them on top, but layer it so they wont get wet.

Of course It will care for it if she saw it fall because any animal mother is like a human mother and all of the mothers in the world care for their children.
