Yes, the laser damages the retina and the rods & cones that allow you to see various things. In my area, laser pointers have been banned just for that reason.

yea. lasers, depending on intensity, can cause permanant damage to the retina of your eye. Any light source that is bright enough can do that, not just lasers.
